CD out to duplication house. Over 700MB

Post by Dwetmaster »

Hi Guys.
I have a 67mins DDP file that's larger than 700MB. Now the duplication house stresses me saying that it has to be under 700. But I have no clue how to do that. My files are 44.1/16 and it passes the Redbook validation.

I thought the only thing that mattered for a CD was the Time Duration?

Could you burn a master copy on your system and send them THAT to duplicate? Maybe as a .dmg file?

That's what I did but I got the same Over 700MB reply.

I guess I'm wondering why are they saying that a 74 mins CD is 650MB if 74mins of 44/16 audio=783MB???

There is likely some overhead for directory listings and perhaps some file optimization going on. I don't know enough about it to provide a definitive answer but maybe try asking a different duplication house. Frankly, then you're working with should be able to tell you why. Ya think?

Thanks MLC
Mike, Like I said my file is 67mins long which is way under the 74min limit.

I did ask another Duplication house and they say only the 74min limit is important.
I also found this over at Gearslutz:
Red Book CD Audio really has nothing whatsoever to do with file size, because there are no "files" involved. A 72 minute program should fit, regardless of what some computer thinks the size is when interpreted as a "file"
So do you guys think it is safe to assume this duplication house is "full of it"?

Again, try another house. If you can burn a Redbook compliant disc on your machine there's no reason they can't. I don't understand why they wouldn't. Are they adding anything of their own? Ads? Graphics? Big honkin' icons?

It's audio. Only the final length is important. A "mastering engineer" who doesn't know this ... well what else doesn't that person know?

Interestingly, Red Book limit has been 79.8 minutes since 1999. I suppose that there must be a few older CD players that can't play over 74 minutes which is why some manufacturers still refuse masters over 74. Some commercial disks do exceed 80 minutes and play back in most standard players.

Anyway, 74' is safe. I am remastering an old project originally released on a 90 minute cassette. Careful editing has allowed me to get it to 79'40". I'm not quite done but I have been assured that getting it pressed will be no problem. Unfortunately, there are no bonus tracks that I can add to make a longer double-cd of the project and no one wants a version with 42' on one disk and 46' on the other.
