Loss of panning - recording via analogue desk

Post by Studio Llama »

Hi all

Hope this day finds you well. I have a newb problem I'm sure someone can help with.

I am using DP effectively as a tape machine, recording my synths, guitars etc through a Soundtracs analogue console. Line in to mixer, tape out in to RME fireface in. From there I record down to a mono audio track in DP then once done, I send back out of the FF to a spare channel, tape in on the mixer in order to monitor and ideally, mix!!!

I don't have any pan control on the mixer however when sending it back out, I wonder if this is a limitation of the mixer, by virtue of the fact that I am sending it through the tape in, however, I don't think so. There is no pan control in DP either. I'm sure there is a good explanation for this, I just don't know it...

Thanks for any advices... :)

You won't see pan knobs on mono tracks in the DP mixer unless the output is set for a stereo pair. If it's set to a mono output, there is nowhere to pan it to.

Jim, I can see pan knobs on my mono channels. Maybe the OP has "pan" unchecked in the mini menu in the far upper right corner of the mixer window?

Rats! I knew I would get that wrong if I didn't open the program!

Tiny rats maybe. I think Jim had it right. If you set the output of a mono channel to a single mono output, the pan knob disappears.

That could be. When I checked on a current compete project (still in final mix mode), all of my tracks, mono or stereo, were set to output to a common stereo output.

Okay, then I did remember correctly! It only stands to reason.... If its a mono output, then what good is a pan knob?

Hi

Thanks for the replies, yes, it was a green newb moment, the fact I noticed something 'different' was because as Buzzy said, I had previously outputted both mono and stereo tracks to a single stereo out, hence why pan remained.. Sorted now, thanks again
