Acoustic gtr instrument: Orange Tree, Pettinhouse, Ample?

Post by Gravity Jim »

I am in a situation now where recording a real acoustic guitar with an open mic is problematic. So I'm shopping for a great sounding AG sample instrument.

I think Orange Tree sounds great and has some nice features. Ditto Pettinhouse. But Ample's AGT, AGM and AGL bundle is my favorite so far.

I've done some archive searching here but would lie some more feedback, especially from DP users who have experience with more than one of these. Thanks in advance.

Jim, I was hesitant to post because I am in an acoustic guitar phase at the moment, for the first time in many years, so have been shunning sample libraries for that job of late. :-)

I can, however, sing high praise for Orange Tree Samples. Just not sure it will cover all of your jobs. You might prefer to have a library with more than one guitar or maybe different emphases.

So, with that in mind, may I recommend you consider Vir2's Acousti6ity (or whatever the final name wound up being)? I don't have it, but if you have an SOS subscription you can read the review in the just-released September issue. They gave it the highest possible praise and pretty much crowned it the king of all acoustic guitar libraries.

It also contains a mandolin, a guitarlele, an 'ukulele, and I think a few other things. I'm sure it will be way better than Acoustic Legends, which I own but only bought at a huge discount because it covered some instruments no one else has (and which I don't own in their acoustic form).

I have found Vir2's recent libraries (not their first few like the dreadful Bassis) to be well-programmed, flexible, well-recorded, consistent, and deeply documented.

I mostly use Orange Tree if I'm doing a quick mockup of a strummed acoustic rhythm part. Sometimes I'll use RealGuitar, but I can barely tolerate its synth sound anymore. I mostly use it for 12-string duty when in a rush. It's not terribly flexible but can come in handy now and then if you want to quickly play with chord voicings.

I have not yet updated Acoustic Guitar from Pettinhouse as I thought there might be a V3 coming so skipped it during the recent sale. From the demo version that I have though, I'd say it's a huge step up from V1, but I can't remember if it has the updated scripting or not, which has made such a difference with the ones it's been added to (such as the bass library).

Thanks for the input. Right now I'm trying out the acoustic models in a Variax 700, and finding them more usable than expected. I may end up keeping it (the electric sitar, electric 12, and Gretsch models fill some holes for me, too) and just using a sample instrument for nylon string leads.

I'll check out Acousti6ity ASAP.

I have all of these as well.

Each of them have their good qualities but I find myself reaching for Ample more than any other.

Be aware that Greg is about to update the scripts/etc. for the Orange Tree products based on further development of the engine for the just-released Stratocaster library.

Years since a reply. Sorry to resurrect an old thread but I'm casting a vote for Ample AGM. I spent a few days listening to and trying out demos when possible. Hands down...Ample is a clear winner for realistic sounding. It has a play mode that restricts you from playing impossible notes, which changes the way you play so that the delivery is very authentic to an actual guitarist playing. That sold me.
