Recording a Cello and Soprano Concert

Post by leigh »

I have a gig in August to record a concert by a soprano singer and a cellist who will be playing separately and also together. The venue is a small, ~100-seat, very-live room which is likely to be filled to capacity.

I haven't recorded solo cello before. I've heard this cellist with this cello in this room before and they have a huge sound.

My plan is to use a Royer SF-24 plus Neumann M-149 spot mic's (probably set to hyper-cardioid) for each performer, running the mic's into my Metric Halo ULN-8 at 24/192. I'd appreciate any suggestions, especially about mic-ing the cello.

Thanks.

I'd run a stereo pair as well. What the heck, you've got extra channels. You may decide not to use them in the final mix, but then again you may like what you hear and decide not to use the spot mics. I did a concert a few years back of a tenor with piano accompaniment. I had both spot mics and a spaced pair out front. I ended up not using the spot mics at all. The stereo pair were just cheap Rode NT1's but I was amazed at the remarkable job they did.

It is likely that the SF-24 is going to give you everything you need. It is one of the best stereo ribbon mics you can buy - but you already know that.

A couple of spot mics may make you feel comfortable, I suppose but you may decide to leave them out of the mix.
