No, it is not an interface, just a mic pre with analog and digital outputs, it looks very promessing. I am looking for a nice mutichannel pre, that's why I wanted to know if anyone had tried it yet.

It's not available yet. Does look inviting though.

What's the general word on this new Onyx stuff? I've heard little to indicate whether or not it's trash. I know the VLZ pre's were terrible (in my experience at least).

Mackie's page indicates "coming soon", but sweetwater and a few other places are offering it. I havnen't called, so I do not know for sure, but I though it was already out.

It does have a firewire card as an option.

It does sound like a usable product , if they actually sound good. Can't say too much about Mackies pre's. Since the Onyx mixers supposedly has the same pre's-but they aren't released yet so its a guessing game thus far.
What about the Presonus firewire dealio?

I have the Mackie Onyx 1620 mixer which has 8 of the Onyx preamps. I run the direct outs from the mixer into a MOTU 24i/o. I have been getting a *lot* of compliments about the sound - detailed, clean, clear solid sound. I like the sound better than the Mackie VLZ Pro preamps or the D8b preamps or the Aardvark 24/96 preamps. I don't have a lot of experience with high end preamps, such as the Avalon, et. al., so I can't comment on the Mackie marketing spin, but for good solid recording, these will do just fine. The mixer runs less than $100. per channel, so its like getting a free mixer with a bank of solid preamps.

The October SOS magazine has a very positive review of the 1620.
