Our monitors

Post by supersonic »

I would be interested in what each one of us uses as studio monitors.
I use my APS monitors given that I also beta test them. I also use Barefoots and small TV speakers :-)

I've none now as my Alesis 720 DSPs more-or-less died and are serving duties as part of my first-ever home stereo system, but look forward to something like the Opals... one day.

I'm going out on a branch... I mean, limb here, but I've the niggling feeling supersonic wants to get an idea of which sorts of noise-makin' boxes we've got sitting in front of us. Just a stab in the dark, as the song goes, but I'm feelin' lucky...

Yamaha HS80M & EquatorD5's. Slumming it compared to all you!!
Has anyone used the Blue Sky ProDesk MKIII 2.1 System, Acoustic Energy, or NHT? Mike Senior recommends them in his book for good honest response at the lower cost bracket.

I still use Mackie 824s I bought a day or two after the first of them arrived here in town. They replaced some 20 year old 3-way BBC/KEF monitors I was using to that point. What a difference that was. The Mackie's were quite reasonably priced when they first arrived, then the price went up quite a bit.

I never think about these monitors. They always do exactly what I expect, and seem completely unremarkable in every respect. I don't know how they compare to more up to date models.

Yamaha HS50m's w/ matching sub. So far all the mixes I've down translate very very well on pretty much every system I've played em on. Cheapest monitors I've ever used, and seemingly the most accurate. I use an Apogee MiniDac to monitor with if that matters.

I knew I needed new monitors when consonants were more intelligible on the JBLs in my Prius than on my KRKs.

Now it is a pair Equator D5s with a sub and I'm very happy.

The brand of sub doesn't matter - at some point I will replace it but it's doing the job nicely for now.

When I first fired up the D5s, it was on an extremely well known hit from the '70s. My first thought was "damn, it makes that French horn sound like s..." then I listened again and realized that the horn was poorly recorded and flat. Damn! Had Clive Davis heard the mix through these, that session would have had a re-do.

I've been tempted by the D8s but there's no room on my desk. Besides, I really need a better sub first.
