To quote a shoemaker, Just Do It !!

Seriously, experiment, pan things - AutoPan other things - put reverb on something you never would. Slap that Motu MultiMode Filter on a bass track and route the kick track to the envelope input.

The worst that happens is that you don't like it... and then you can undo it.

I'll automate panning on Backing Vocals to get fullness and different feels from Chorus to Verse, etc.

When mixing, there are many things one can do to get a great mix....or kill it. It ALWAYS starts with the drums and bass. Spend as much time as you need to to get the Drums and Bass to sound perfect on their own, because if they don't the rest of the mix will never come together. This is done with creating "space" not only with EQ, but with PAN. The hardest is the Bass Guitar and Kick Drum, the Kick needs to hold the bottom down and cut through everything at the same time. The Bass Guitar needs to be the glue that holds the foundation together, yet cut through not only the mix but the Kick drum so they don't cover each other up. This all starts with your recording when doing drums first.

Spend the time getting your foundation tracks where you want to hear them by playing with EQ and PAN, everything else will fit in around it.

Here is an example, it's an old mix and not one of the better one's but you can hear what I'm referring to with separation (hopefully anyway! haha)

thanks guys, hey WONDER, when you say "automate panning", are you actually turning the knob during the song and is it a really slow turn and only to 9 oclock and 3 oclock, or is it an auto pan, etc? thanks for any help
