When recording mics onto the computer:
I don't hear any difference between the PREAMP LINES and the OTHER LINES.
Do I have to run the mics into the PREAMPS, then OUT, and then IN to the OTHER LINES?

Not at all. Just use the mic pre and record from that channel straight into your DAW.

Creativity, some digital stuff and analogue things that go boom. crackle, bits of wood with strings on them that go twang

The preamp outs are there in case you want to run through a compressor, EQ or some other processor before going into the computer. No need to use them if you're not doing that.
