More Vienna Symphony Library questions

Post by darrell »

Hi All,

I posted the following to the VSL forums, but would appreciate hearing from some MOTU users, specifically about how well VSL instruments work inside of DP:

"I am ready to buy a couple of VSL individual instruments, but am a complete novice when it comes to the products. A couple of questions:

What is the difference between Standard & Full library purchases (besides the price, of course!)? Is the Standard Libray adequate, with enough data? I know that depends on what I want to do with it, but I don't yet intend to create finished products, ie, film scores, etc.

Does VSL provide a free sample player with purchase? If not, are there no proprietary players that will work?

I see that 'shipping' to the USA is 25 euros. Could that be correct?"

Thanks for your help!

VSL + DP = Power, beauty and elegance

The standard libraries contain your bread and butter basic articulations for traditional orchestral instruments. The extended libraries contain complementary articulations and I think some non-standard instruments like cornets, Wagner tubas, etc.

If things haven't changed, you use the free VI player to use with your instruments. You have the option to purchase the Pro version, which is much more powerful.

Do they still "ship"?? I mean, I know their libraries are huge, but I don't see why not have downloadable files, like most other vendors have now-a-days.

You will LOVE VSL, but you must know that, in order to get the most out of these libraries, you must REALLY delve deeply into keyswitches and programming all the nuances via CCs with their tools (this is where VI Pro shines).
Otherwise, if you don't do those things, it won't sound more real than an expressive 80's rompler.
The other day a friend of mine complained about this. When I asked him if he was using diffrent articulations, like real players do, he was like.... Multiple what?... :shake:
And that would be true for other libraries as well, but other libraries are a little more "ready" out of the box. VSL just requires a little more orchestration knowledge and chops to make it scream.

There is a Vienna Download Manager for a couple of years now, that as far as I know is now the only way to install.

It's quite efficient and easy to use, and forgiving of bad or intermittent connections.

The files are also now compressed quite a bit, for faster downloads and less disc space once unpacked. I think I might have re-downloaded content originally bought on DVD's, to save disc space.

As I upgraded to VI Pro and rarely launch the regular VI (usually by accident), I can't remember whether the only differences are what is found in the "Advanced" tab, but I do know that I use Pro features quite a bit.

The VSL pages are very detailed in listing articulations included in Standard vs. Extended. I recommend looking at those, and if you don't understand what all of the articulations are (it can take a while as they are instrument-specific in many cases), pose questions here.

I don't do Hollywood-type writing myself, so my needs are probably different than most, in that I'm not a big fan of Legato in general, in any genre of music. So my "minimal patch set" might not be representative.
