A crash question

Post by supersonic »

Hi

I am having a crash behaviour that I have shared with MOTU but I need a quick fix to finish a project tonight and was hoping that perhaps someone may know a solution. DP freezes (needs a force shutdown) every so often, sometimes at the end of the bounce, sometimes during normal editing. The console then spins the same message hundreds of times.

+ IOAudioEngineUserClient[<private>]::performWatchdogOutput(<private>, 186556) - (5bf4,300)
The numbers at the end vary but the rest is always the same.

Does that ring a bell for anyone?

Crash at the end of a bounce? First thing I’d check is the RAM. Probably not but...

What OS?

Do you reboot daily? Memory leaks can cause you to run out of available RAM. Booting daily clears out the cache. This is a pretty well known issue.

Disable App Nap globally. DP doesn’t play well with it.

Tried both. remote and system drive. I usually have one audio drive and one sample drive. Both are Thunderbolt SSD Raid solutions.

I'd try disabling all 3rd party plugs and see if that helps. In early version of DP 9 my PSP Xenon plug would crash the system on bounce, but the AU plug worked fine. I wonder if there's something like that happening. I responded to another post in the board here yesterday with similar issues. I think he might have been on High Sierra.

I'm on Sierra, using a Focusrite interface, but haven't run into this issue yet.
But I've seen a number of audio forum posts elsewhere of people having the watchdog error in Sierra and High Sierra. I haven't looked into it, but my vague understanding of the error is that it "may" have to do with the audio not arriving when it is expected. As such, I think I'd try various DP buffer settings, low, medium and high to see if one of the settings works better. I'd also check that your Apollo driver is up to date, and maybe even re-install it even if it is up to date.
I'd also try resetting the PRAM, NVRAM and SMC just for good measure.
