dp9.51 cpu overload
CPU overload error message after about 5 minutes.
Macbook Pro (mid 2010) Running mac OS El capitan 10.11.6, DP 9.51. 8GB memory. . Recently upgraded to a 500GB SSD. buffer set at 1026 which has always worked well with this rig (MOTU 8Pre firewire 800)We've re-set the SMC and same isssue persists. Program works fine and activity meter is at 29%. Slowly adding tracks and effects I built up to 6 mono & 1 stereo tracks with 3 auxes and a Master. Played back at 40% activity but didn't overload, But try to change something (ie volume fader)and activity shoots up to 80% and CPU error message appears in DP. Can't really get a session going without this cpu overload occurring. Thanks for any help.

Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
There’s definitely an issue. I am experiencing it too. I am running at 96 with 16 gig of ram on my 6core trash can with 45 tracks and a decent amount of plugs mostly UAD which is powered remotely of course. My workaround is to put the buffer size to 2048. Everything then runs fine.
Mac Pro Six Core Trashcan OX.10.13.3,Macbook Pro 2.53 GHz Intel Core i5 OSX 10.11,DP 8.07 and 9.52,Protools 2018.4 and 10.3.9,Logic 10.4.1.,Reason 8,Waves V9.7. Diamond Bundle, Mach Five 3.2.1, Vir 2, Kontakt 5.3, Melodyne Studio 3.2.2.2, Melodyne Single Track, Motu 2804 MK3, Apollo 8 Quad,Apollo 8 Duo,UAD 2 FireWire Quad Satellite, UAD Thunderbolt Quad Satellite, Rosetta 800, Avalon Vt 747sp, Focusrite 4x Red One, UAD 4-710d, Raven MTi 2 3.3.1, Motu MIDI Express XT.

Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
For the OP, 8 gig of RAM is weaksauce. 16, or better yet 24 gigs, may well resolve your issues.
Another thing: a 2009 single-CPU Mac Pro can easily be firmware upgraded to a 2010 (5,1) at no expense, and hex CPU installed (about $75 used from eBay). If your 2009 is a dual CPU model, it, too, can be upgraded to 5,1, but the CPU swap is a little more complicated.
I'm running 5,1 hex DP9.51 under Sierra with 32 gigs of RAM and this is not an issue I have encountered. My hex 5,1 Mac Pro began life as a quad 4,1. The upgraded machine is almost twice as powerful as it was in its prior form.

Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
If running a significant session and changes are made in real time, it would seem DP's pre-rendering engine has to re-compute everything, possibly the cause of the warnings. Once everything is automated and pre-rendered, getting a solid master may not be a problem.
PS: Turn off the CPU warning in DP while working. If you are worried when rendering a mix (with whatever method you prefer), turn the warning back on and see what you see, then increase the buffer size if issues are encountered.

Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
Just an aside: When MOTU introduced the CPU usage window recently (I'm not in the studio and don't recall the exact name) I ordered the list by CPU usage and was surprised at how much CPU the UA plugs were using - more than some native plugs. I have a UA Octo and Duo card installed.Bennie Sims wrote:<<<decent amount of plugs mostly UAD which is powered remotely of course. >>>

Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
I’ve checked that meter in the past and discovered the waves plugs and slate plugs were the ones using the most dsp. My uads were using the least amount of dsp. Its been awhile since I checked that and so maybe I will check that again!philbrown wrote:Just an aside: When MOTU introduced the CPU usage window recently (I'm not in the studio and don't recall the exact name) I ordered the list by CPU usage and was surprised at how much CPU the UA plugs were using - more than some native plugs. Re: dp9.51 cpu overload
For me, heaviest load for a plugin is Altiverb. I run several on buses, so they must run in realtime, and show a significant CPU load.
