Still on DP7.24 and SL 10.6.8

Post by Hideout »

I’m running this on a 2008 8core MAC Pro.
The thing is rock freaking solid and I honestly cannot remember the last time I had a crash.

Now... I am tempted by some of the new features in 9.5 - especially the time and pitch features.
I am admittedly very spoiled by the stability my system had but want to know what is the consensus on the most stable combination of DP 9.5 and Mac OS?
I’ll probably have to cajole the old codger Mac to run a newer OS. Anyone done that?
Or should I just get a couple of SSDs and call it good?

Thanks in advance!

Pretty sure the latest version of DP runs under Snow Leopard... check MOTU's site for requirements. I recently moved to Sierra when I learned MODO Bass (which I love dearly) from IK wouldn't install under Mountain Lion.

Regardless of OS, definitely get an SSD or two!

Thanks, HCMarkus.
Do you have any experience with the latest DP version under SL?

Still using El Capitan 10.11.6, and run DP 9.5 without any problems.

Computer (MacPro 2009) hasn't crashed on me since I went to DP 9.5 a couple of months ago....but previous version of DP 9.x were problematic.

No. I moved from DP8 and Mountain Lion simultaneously after DP9 had been out for awhile. I had been running Mountain Lion since it was established as solid, probably .2 or .3.

I'm in the same situation as you, Hideout. Eventually, I know upgrading is inevitable, but I've never had it better than I do now.

You guys might want to maintain your current system drive, but start from scratch on a new boot drive with updated software and see how it goes. You may be pleasantly surprised!

7.24 is a good build, best one since 5.13, IMO. If you don’t want or need any of the newer features, no reason to upgrade, I suppose.

It will not install after El Capitan but works through Sierra if the OS is updated (can’t say the same about all 3rd party plugs you may be using with it). It won’t work on any APFS drive as the Auth file cannot be written, even if it was installed and the OS updated.

Then there’s the issue of older OS. It’s a good idea that, if you aren’t (or can’t) upgrade, to consider using another computer for internet access. Part of it is security; the rest is that many older protocols are being superseded and many sites will no longer be accessible. On a Mac Pro, one boot drive for DP 7, another for everything else can work.

FWIW, I didn’t move to an SSD till just before El Cap. My iMac ran better and faster with each OS update after 10.8.3 on.

Of course, you should keep a partition running os 10.6.8 and DP 7.24 (i.e. your current setup) just in case.

Not a good idea if on an SSD and updating to High Sierra.

I'm running 10.6.8 on my old MacPro [1,1] with DP 9.02. It's running fine. When 9.1 came out I tried the update but got frequent crashes, so I reverted to 9.02. I haven't yet tried 9.51 on that machine. I'm hoping to do so soon.
So far, 9.51 has been rock solid on my [3,1] machine running OS 10.11.6.

Thanks for all the input and info guys. I wish my 2008 Mac Pro were updatable to a newer OS. Alas...

It is updatable. Take a spin over to MacRumors.com:

https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/ma ... ad.1977128

Visited there, and found this:
Here is the official Apple link for Sierra, for those "late" to the party types.:D
