Help with OS update

Post by jim2b »

Hi folks,

I'm on DP 8.05/Mountain Lion/Mid 2010 Mac Pro(6 core xeon, 3.33mgh).

I want to update to Sierra. Any issues that I should be aware of?

Thanks,
Jim

Many threads on the subject. 32bit only 3rd party plugins may have issues but most should have caused you grief by OS 10.8.2 if they were going to.

Make sure that you update DP to 8.07 and also update any hardware drivers.

Turn off App Nap. best to disable it globally.
viewtopic.php?f=26&t=63261

If you boot from an SSD, run the following command in Terminal and enter your Admin password when prompted (has no effect on mechanical hard drives).

sudo trimforce enable

32bit only applications may not run. Universal (32/64bit) will. Again, this issue should have been resolved already.

Older Adobe (CS6, Acrobat X) and Microsoft apps may no longer install but, if installed, should work — with a few exceptions.

You will be prompted to download the latest 64bit JRE (Java Run Time) from Oracle, Do this.

If you have any 32bit applications requiring Java (there are many), you must also download JRE 6 from Apple.
https://support.apple.com/kb/dl1572?locale=en_US

JRE 6 is 32bit only; 8 is 64bit only. They will not conflict. Since Mavericks, Apple and Microsoft are no longer allowed to bundle Java with their OS. Oracle owns it now and makes those rules.

Thanks, Mike.

What is the reasoning behind updating to 8.07?

8.07 was a super solid release for me. I sat there (running under Mountain Lion) for a good long time, until I just had to have MODO Bass. Jumped right to Sierra, and then I went for DP9, which has been quite solid as well.

And MODO was worth it, not to mention the fact that the Sierra upgrade went smoothly for me. Also, it's nice having the updated security and interconnectivity with my other Macs.

It's the most stable version and rock solid in Sierra.

You should consider upgrading to DP 9. Too many reasons. A project can be worked in either to compare.

Thanks HC and Mike,

Should I update motu audio and MIDI driver, and UAD software before or after going to Sierra?

Thanks again,

I used to have a utility that told me which apps were 32 bit and which were 64 bits. I don't have that anymore, apparently, but I'm looking for some way to tell. Do you know how to tell if an app is 32 bits? That's been useless information to me for so long that I no longer remember the places I used to go to see it. I don't want to boot the apps; just know if they are 32 bits.

I don't know that it matters. I normally update drivers after I do an OS update.

Next step is DP 9.5.
Rename your current DP installation by adding 8.07 to the name. Otherwise, DP 9 will overwrite it. Whenever you want to A/B two versions of 9, this tip works as well.

Yippie!

PS: Do what Mike recommends, so the new install won't overwrite 8.07 and you can return to it if necessary.

Hi Shooshie,

The only thing that I can think of is to highlight the app and "Get Info".
I think it will say 32 or 64 bit.

Good luck,

"I don't want to boot the apps; just know if they are 32 bits.

Shoosh"

Shoosh: In System Information Utility ( was Sys Profiler B4? ) left column select Software>Applications. Let it load… Top window lists all Apps, etc. Far right column is 64 Bit. And shows a YES or NO for each App. Hope this helps. Just another one we forgot, I had to go looking too.
