Many applications do not allow the use of certain characters in file names.

At least MOTU changes the name. You can really screw up Finale files by not paying attention to this.

DP: no "?" allowed in BTD?

I remember in early days of Mac reading that if you named a file ".sony" you could seriously hose your computer.

yeah- but at least the "/" issue in Finale has finally been fixed, meaning you can now use that character in part names i.e. "Piano/Lead Sheet" and in file names, without issues.

James, are you serious? I mean, nothing surprises me anymore, but that's pretty bizarre! What would happen if you named a file ".Microsoft"? Maybe .BillGates would turn the icon into a devil with horns! Or .IBM would play the 1984 Super Bowl Mac Commercial!

Cool factoid: many Macs of the 1990s actually had video easter eggs embedded in the motherboard. They had leftover ROM space or something, so they put a video in there. the Centris/Quadra 660 AV and 840 AV had the engineering team that made it discussing their new creation while celebrating its completion with champagne in the office. You only had to know how to access it. I found out and tried it, and sure enough... it was there. Then there was the Finder Easter Egg with the pirate flag flying over the One-Infinite-Loop compound. Lots of others. I miss those. The Mac always felt like something fun, a powerful computer, advanced in many ways, but made by people like us who had fun like us.

There used to be a game embedded in Word 5.1 but I don't remember what word or words you typed to make it show.

Indeed he was. And though I wouldn't say we were tight, we were at least acquainted. His wife was my little girl's 2nd grade teacher. Doug Smith [Stang] and I met a few times up at the school. The irony was that it was on NetDay, when we wired the school for internet, that I found out who he was. His site had been one of the early WWW experimental sites. You could have blown me over with a feather.
