Xils-Lab releases "Poly-M" (virtual Polymoog synth)

Post by David Polich »

Xils-Lab has released "Poly-M", a software recreation
of the Moog Polymoog 203a from the late 1970's. The
Polymoog's modt famous use was in the Gary Numan
hit "Cars"...the bubbly opening sound and the
high string line (the "Vox Humana" preset) in that track.

Chick Corea also made use of the Polymoog for
strings, brass, and swelling pads on the Return
to Forever album "Romantic Warrior". Other noted
Polymoog users included Tony Banks of Genesis
and Gary Wright of "Dreamwaver" fame.

Speaking as someone who owned a Polymoog
for several years, I can attest to the authenticity
of Poly-M...its sound is a bit fizzy, somewhat thin,
and definitely analog..it sounds like I remember my
Polymoog sounded. Unlike the other polyphonic
Memorymoog (which was released years after
the Polymoog) the Polymoog utilized "divide-down"
oscillators to achieve polyphony..similar in some
aspects to string machines like the ARP Solina.
So it was not as fat and thick as the Memorymoog,
or the Sequential Prophet 5 or Oberheim
OB-X. However, it did feature Moog's famous
24db/octave "ladder" filter, with its smooth sound
and capacity to make "squelches" and "blips" like
only a Moog filter could.

Poly-M is fully analog modeled, no samples. And
it has some features that the original Polymoog did
not, allowing creation of sounds the original was
incapable of.

Its on sale for a couple of weeks at 99 Euros...considerably
less than the $8k most used Polymoogs are going
for on eBay.
