Back to Mavericks
Having had all kinds of hang up since Yosemite up to Sierra on my Mac Pro 2013 I decided to go back to Mavericks. Not a single hang up in days. The most smooth sailing experience I have had for many years.

Re: Back to Mavericks
To each his own. I found Mavericks to be the worst of the post 10.4 Mac OS. There are some nasty bugs and huge security holes in it. No thanks. DP 9.13 is slower in it and requires a larger buffer, too.

Sierra has been fine for me. No hangups to date.

Re: Back to Mavericks
I also find it slower, the security is non issue in my network setup (military grade). Under Yosemite and later my Mac pro has had hangups similar to those experienced by the GPU problematic mac pros. For now. It is the only way for me to work without the system hanging up and reverting to the login window while closing down everything on the way.

Re: Back to Mavericks
Strangely enough, a few things are faster under Mavericks for me. Loading projects, switching between chunks for one.

Re: Back to Mavericks
Speaking of Mavericks, In a related question: does anyone know how to purchase a legal copy of 10.10? My Mac Pro 3,1 is still on 10.9.5 and there are a few things that are now 10.10 and above only. It also potentially extends the life of my machine a bit since I can't upgrade the processor. I seem to remember there were people with issues here when 10.10 came out so I ignored it, it is not in my purchased list in the App store and is no longer available via Apple (only the updaters). I obviously can't upgrade to 10.11 on this machine. So, I'm stuck.
So if there is a safe and legal way for me to obtain a copy I'd appreciate it. I could then update to 10.10.5 and call it a day.
Thanks!
Joel

Re: Back to Mavericks
FYI, Joel, I think there are ways to install the current OS (10.12) on your 3,1.

Re: Back to Mavericks
Thank you! But wow: It's above my "pay grade" in knowledge. Any idea how safe this is to try? It makes me a bit nervous about hosing my machine.
Best,
Joel

Re: Back to Mavericks
I can't speak to this matter with any authority. Could you try it with a spare boot drive (not your working system disk) and see how it works?

Re: Back to Mavericks
Much better idea. It would take some time to find and clone a drive, but certainly safer. At least with my "Cheese Grater" I can pop drives in and out pretty easily. Still, it is a "project." I just wish I could get a legal copy of 10.10...
Sigh...
Thanks!

Re: Back to Mavericks
Mike can probably offer some insight, but perhaps you could simply install on a free drive and then, if the install goes well, use Migration Assistant to move essentials to the new drive.
