Problems loading Sierra

Post by apanacci »

Hey guys, thought I would start a new thread. Did the firmware upgrade to 5.1 on my 2009 Mac. I had 10.9.5 on my disk, downloaded Sierra and installed. Computer hangs at startup with all of that computer info hang up stuff. This is a secondary drive and not concerned. Just trying this out. It is a clone of my main drive. Both are in the same computer. Tried holding the shift key on startup ,does,nt work. I am am thinking of wiping the drive and reinstalling from scratch. The drive is partitioned in 3 ways. Is it possible just to wipe clean the partition that the system resides on or do I have to wipe the whole drive? Thanks

I'd start by reapplying a fresh copy of the latest OS.

On startup, holding the...

Shift key rebuilds desktop, restores caches and alias connections — not what you want.

Option key lets you select startup disk or partition.

Command-R lets you boot into the Repair partition (if you have one — cloning does not create one).

If you download the latest installer, it will open and let you pick the drive of installation and will create a Repair partition in the process. When done, it will reboot and open Migration Assistant letting you import network settings (always recommended), applications and documents (work product) or nothing at all from any connected drive or a Time Machine backup.

Besides the OS, the installer will also include Apple applications (30) and utilities (17). Those not essential to the OS can be deleted.

Yes but exactly how depends on the version of Disk Utility you are running.

The easiest way is to boot from another drive, Disk Utility and re-partition the drive in question fro 3 to 2. This will erase the partition you want if you are careful and do it right. When done, re-partition to 3. This will leave a completely blank partition.

When you go to install Sierra, you will need to run DU from the installer to initialize that partition only — if you can. Sierra will not install otherwise.

If you cannot do the above, run DU from the Sierra installer to erase and re-initialize the drive—you can also re-partition if you must. Plan to restore your other partitions from your backup copies.

The only reason to partition a drive anymore is because you are running multiple versions of the OS. No other reason has been valid since OS 10.5 on a G5.

Hey Mike, I am going to take your advice and backup the disk, erase and not partition it. Makes things alot easier. Thanks for your expertise as always !
