Why 24/192 downloads don't make sense. Great, Monty!

Post by FMiguelez »

This guy Monty Montgomery wrote this great article about digial signal processing, modern converters and DAWs, etc.
There's also his related video, which is almost as good.

He explains everything beautifully, with SCIENCE.
I was never impressed with high SRs. I'm so glad I was never fooled by lying marketing departments and their crap.
But I do have some specal snake juice in case anyone is looking for some magic and hypersonic foolishness.

Great and nice light reading for a Sunday morning. And yes... I AM a proud geek :headbang:

I've shared that article and video often - indeed great stuff!

I do still sell the "limited editions" of the virtual Brooklyn Bridge to anyone I can, though. A collector's item!

I respect Neil for at least TRYING to improve music’s playback fidelity.

Yes, this is a great article, in part because it gives references. One thing not addressed is the difference between 44.1 and 48, Many here have said they can hear the difference, me included. There were suggestions about confirmation biases, but also speculation that some converters are made to run at 48 and use some workaround to produce 44.1 files.

It depends very much on the individual converter implementation. The older PCIe MOTU line sound obviously cleaner/clearer in the top end at higher rates. The newer AVB line reveals less difference. Either one (and likely any converter out there) has more linear phase response as rates go up. At 44K1, it wouldn't take more than a couple converter round trips to have your top end 180 degrees out of phase with your bottom end.

There is one critical difference. Music for picture is required to be at 48k. That has nothing to do with fidelity or perceivable improvements in audio. It has everything to do with frame rate.

For someone who writes a lot of music to picture it makes sense to stay at 48k and leave it there.

Set it and forget it. Can I hear a difference? I never spent the time to sit in a room quiet enough to judge that for myself. I know people with wa better hearing than I have and I wouldn't be the least bit surprised if some of them can, in fact, hear the difference. In my daily work (which does require I drop to 44.1k every so often) I can't hear a difference great enough to warrant one or the other.

The whole 44k thing dates back to CDs, which are all but obsolete at this point. Digital stuff is usually highly compressed and dumbed down, in one way or another. So 48k would seem overkill. Then again, the times they are always a-changin' and it wouldn't be surprising if the industry adopted 48k as the new standard. They may not, of course, but if they did, I like knowing my music is ready to go and conversions would be unnecessary.

So for the hobbyists, I'd say 44/1 is fine. You other guys might want to think about 48/24 as the standard.

Just sayin'...

Yes, using 48 is a no brainer. The file size difference is trivial and conversion to other rates is easy. So 48 is as good a standard as any.

But there was probably a reason for going to 48, and the article suggests it was a bogus reason. He says when it comes to playback, 16/44.1 is as good as anything.

After going back and forth between 44,1/24 and 48/24, I finally settled on the latter at 48.

Mostly because of the convenience of dealing with music production houses, since 99% of what I do is broadcast anyway. This is despite my libraries being almost all at 44.1, so DP or VE Pro do the SRC in real time, with no discernible extra CPU hit.

44.1 and 48 sound the same to me so far with my libraries.

Just to be clear, it was MLC that posted the statement under "bayswaster"

Sorry. It was my fault, Bays.
