Syncing 2 Macs with 2 896mk3 ?

Post by Klaus »

Has anybody done that ?
How exactly ?
Mac ( 10.6.8 ) DAW 1 : DP 7.24, 896mk3, editing / mixing, sending 16 ADAT out to
Mac ( 10.6.8 ) DAW 2 : Mixbus 32C, 896mk3 receiving 16 ADAT, mixing
Can a 896mk3 be used for timecode ?
Thanks in advance
and best regards

Timecode? Yes.

I think you can sync the way you want. A cursory glance at the user guide seems to indicate so. Here's a link to a downloadable .pdf.
cdn-data.motu.com/manuals/firewire-usb-audio/896mk3_User_Guide_Mac.pdf

I like these since you can type adat or SMTPE in the search field and quickly scroll through the pages where it appears till you find one that might help.

If that doesn't do it, I'd do a Tech Link at MOTU.com for support.

Thanks a lot Mike
I do have the manual, but this scenario isn't described…step by step, thus I'm
looking for user's reports…
Maybe reports with other interfaces would help already ?
anyone ?
TIA

Sending audio between the two systems is simple. Connect some optical cables. One interface will be set to internal sync. The other interface will be set to slave to the first (could be through optical, AES, S/PDIF, or BNC word)

For transport sync my preference would be to use MTC. The 896 doesn't have MIDI ports so you would need a separate MIDI interface for each computer.

As a matter of fact, even though the 896 will generate or lock to LTC SMPTE that won't work if you have digital connections between the two interfaces, because if you set the second 896 to lock to LTC it will no longer have proper clock sync from the first 896.

Thanks a lot Dave
isn't network MIDI sync of OSX also an option ?
although that has to be established at every boot....

Yes you could probably use MIDI over LAN for sync. I think a more reliable solution would be a hardware connection.

Success
Although not yet with Mixbus 32C as slave, but….
with Digital Performer 7.24, master and slave.
It doesn't always lock at the same spot, but within about MIDI 'timing'
and when locked, stays sample accurate .
No freewheeling too.
Just with 2 896mk3, no MIDI interfaces and a XLR cable for the SMPTE connection
Motu SMPTE setup is my friend...
Thanks Dave for hints
and
best regards
