OMG! 20th anniversary NAMM Dinner!

Postby jwfatgruv » Tue Jan 03, 2017 2:28 am

I can’t believe it, but this is the OMG! 20th anniversary dinner! Yes, that’s right, it’s THAT time of year again!

You do not have to be a NAMM attendee to go to the dinner, you can bring a friend, date, or anyone you would like.

This year it is Friday Jan. 20, 2017, 6:30p, at The El Torito Restaurant (where else?) 2020 E. Ball Rd., Anaheim, CA 92806. We have a private room at El Torito from 6:30p until closing, so don't worry about being "on Time". For those who were here a couple years ago, I have been promised by the manager that we have an iron clad guarantee on the room.

For those attending the NAMM show, we meet at the MOTU booth around 5:45p friday afternoon so that anyone who needs a ride to the dinner can get one. Anyone who doesn't know who I am can just walk up to the handsome guy in a suit standing around the MOTU booth and say "Hi Jim!" That will probably be Jim Cooper, and he can point you towards me, the other Jim. :woohoo:

This will be our OMG 20th!!! annual dinner, we started when the application came on floppy disks (remember those?)! Each year the dinner gets bigger and better! The swag this year may appear (or not), depending on how busy I am.

This is our chance to show & tell the hard working MOTU guys & gals how much we appreciate all their hard work over the past year.

As usual, this is a "no host" affair.

What "NO HOST" means: we each pay our own way, plus a enough extra to cover our honored guests, the MOTU guys. As it turns out, Cambridge dollars are no good out here on the left coast. There will be drinking of alcoholic beverages. If you don’t imbibe, please understand that some of the MOTU guys do, as do most of the rest of us. Please figure that into what is included in your part of the payment. I'm sorry, but if you hang out all night and only order a Coke, that's going to be $20.

Here's the W,W,W,W,W:

Who: You + the uber-cool MOTU guys
What: Dinner, Cocktails, Dancing With The Stars audition opportunity!
When: Friday, Jan. 20, 2017 6:30pm
Where: El Torito Restaurant, 2020 East Ball Road, Anaheim, CA 92806 (714) 956.4880
Why: Why? Because we like you!

Please respond to this message privately (or not) as an RSVP. It's always good to get a head count for the restaurant.

Hope to see you there!

Yea, that was interesting...

I'm still debating whether I go to NAMM or not. If so, I will be there. I'll back channel an RSVP when I decide.

Thanks for the heads-up!

Hmmm... something may put me in LA on Saturday, 1/21. If that happens, I'll show even if I don't make it to NAMM.

I have to emphasize an aspect of this dinner that sometimes is forgotten. It began as our way, as users, to thank the hardworking employees at MOTU... many of the people we've gotten to know on the phone, from tech-support etc. A number of the MOTU guys attend every year, and are often willing to talk some shop, as well as sports, music in general and the sorts of things people chat about in social situations.

The MOTU employees' money is NO GOOD at this dinner. We do not allow them to pay. It is a tradition of which we're quite proud. Thus, if you attend, you are asked to bring enough cash to cover your tab, chip in toward the tip, AND chip in toward the tab of the MOTU guys in attendance. We can't do separate checks with a group this size, so make sure to bring some cash.

Now... let me repeat this:

If you attend, you are asked to bring enough cash to cover your tab, chip in toward the tip, AND chip in toward the tab of the MOTU guys in attendance.

If you have any qualms about doing this, please do not attend.

WHY do I emphasize this? Because last year, apparently a good many people underpaid when they left. We suspect some may have slipped out and "forgot" to chip in. We had a SIX HUNDRED DOLLAR shortfall that Jim Watson essentially had to pay out of his own pocket on his credit card that night! Jim getting stuck with that bill was grossly unfair, so a week or so after NAMM, many of us regular attendees and even people who didn't attend raised the money to reimburse Jim.

Okay... end of story. But as you can see it is a serious matter, and puts the continuation of this dinner at risk. More likely, they will go on but it won't be announced in an open forum but become a more exclusive affair limited to trusted people who've attended past years and can be trusted to contribute fairly to the final tab.

Every year, there are a couple of opening speeches at this dinner. I usually say a few words and I intend to more or less reiterate the contents of this post, followed by a sincere invitation to anyone who is considering being less than forthright in estimating their financial responsibility for what they are about to eat and drink (as well their share to cover the MOTU folks) to make their way to the exit and not participate.

Not gonna make it to NAMM this year, but I'm glad to see you guys are continuing the dinner tradition after last years unfortunate outcome. I'll be tossing back a margie in your honor MOTU, Jim, and James :unicorn: :D

I'd love to be there but can't this year. I'd be happy to contribute a few bucks with a PayPal link or something similar, however.
