Cool -- I didn't get the product update email.

I am currently working on songs where MODO Bass is an important placeholder for realism while I finalize tempi, keys, arrangement, before taking the time to track real bass. So I will definitely make use of this update this week.

My email finally arrived about an hour ago.

I think many emails go out in alphabetical order (last name). :-)

A Studio One user is already complaining about it over on Gearslutz. I think this particular person just has a problematic system setup, as there have been no other complaints about the update.

For us DP users, the only significant audible change is that they reworked some of the noises.
I will check it out in the morning and report on any DP issues, if any.

The slap dynamics are also said to be improved.

I'll test that shortly, if I can run DP while the browser is up. My Chris Hein contrabass download is expected to take 16 hours for some reason -- they must be getting hit by all pre-buyers at once.

The slap is all messed up on this update, if re-rendering files used with the initial version.

I'll retry after editing my MIDI to shorten all of my notes.

Even with 32 or more ticks between notes, it misses the next note unless there's a larger gap than that (for eighth notes e.g.).

Probably I lengthened the notes previously due to whatever issues were just fixed.

I will update after my next round of edits.

Yeow, it's much worse than I thought. I think it's a bug (and a big one).

No matter how much I truncate a whole series of notes, diminish the dynamic range, or try other tricks, F#1 refuses to sound. It seems to be that the note is missing, vs. anything else going on.

Actually, I tried a few more things and I think it has to do with transitioning from an open string.

If the F#1 is preceded by an E1, it refuses to sound. If preceded by a G1, it is OK.

If I instead change the F#1 to a G1, it also refuses to sound, if preceded by an E1.

So, the only way to make an E1 not automatically HAVE to be an open string, is to set to a five string bass, or Drop D tuning.

I tried both of those options. Switching to a 5-string bass (everything else staying the same), fixes the problem. Switching to Drop D tuning -- which forces the "E1" to be fretted vs. an open string -- still has the bug (missing note following "E1" regardless of dynamic range or note lengths or what the note is that follows).

I have not checked non-slap bass modes yet to see if they also suffer this same problem.

Now that I've fully re-tracked the slap bass part using the 5-string variant so that I don't get silent notes after every "E1", I compared to the previous rendering, and can say that the Release Notes are accurate in that the volume handling is somewhat improved for slap style in this update.

Re: Update for Modo Bass

Finger style does not have the problem I encountered with Slap style.

I showed my presets earlier, but here they are again -- note that these are MINE, so you won't find them by name or category, but I list those anyway to describe their purpose.

MODO BASS: Slap: 70’s Aggressive Slap Pop
Model: ’70s J-Bass
Play Style: Slap; Stroke = Auto
Strings: Gauge = Light; Age = New
Electronics: Neck Volume = 8.0
Amp/Fx: Amp = Tube; Harmonics = On; Amp = 6.0; D.I. = 3.0; Master = 5.0
Settings: Pull velocity threshold = 95

MODO BASS: Finger: 80’s P-J Hard Focused
Model: Modern J-Bass
Play Style: Finger; Stroke = Alternate; Touch = Hard
Strings: 5; Gauge = Medium; Age = Broken in
Electronics: Bridge Volume = 8.3; Neck = ’70s P SC
Amp/Fx: Amp = Solid State; Amp = 3.4; D.I. = 6.0; Master = 3.5

I'm quickly running out of energy after a hard day, so don't dare try changing more things to see if the bug is even model-specific vs. style-specific. Hopefully this is enough information for others to work with for now.

Remember, I only list my offset values from the default settings -- that takes long enough as it is. :-)

In reviewing the two renderings of the standard finger-style part in a moderate tempo pop/rock song, it is quite clear that the new update requires a bigger gap between notes in order to be as articulate and clear in its attack as the original product release.

I subtracted twenty ticks from every note in this part (too time-consuming to cherry-pick which notes to make shorter, but this song has "fat" playing with more sustain than my usual hyper-pizzicato style). The result is still not as good as with the original release, in terms of note separation, note-to-note phrasing, and note attack.

Furthermore, there is a big difference in the reported latency of the plug-in, for some reason, but I can't say for certain which version is more accurate. There's a few ticks difference when tracking with this version, and it is repeatable and consistent.

Maybe this version is more reliable than the last, timing-wise (regarding reported plug-in latency compensation). It was a few weeks ago so I don't know if I made compensatory edits for the original rollout of the product.

The timing does seem more accurate in this update, after direct comparisons in several contexts of different playing styles and tempi.

So I don't think the difference is due to plug-in latency reporting, as I had made that judgment from just eight bars of initial testing of the settings. The difference between old and new renderings is consistent between runs, but the timing difference is not always the same as it is contextual. The new version is clearly more accurate.
