DP 7.24 Mac OS question

Post by guitarsark »

I've decided its time for a new Mac. Mine is an older 2009 iMac that runs DP fine, but due to the OS being stuck at 10.8 (10,9 is no longer available) I am unable to run some of the plugins I want to use as they require 10.9 or later. My computer is also getting pretty slow overall.
I like DP7 and really have no need to upgrade tho I am not opposed to it. Most of the recording I do is pretty basic and I probably dont need the latest and greatest version of DP.
I do use Kontakt, which now requires 10.9, the earlier version was erased from my computer and I cant get it back.
What are my best options as far as a new faster Mac ? can DP7 run on the new iMacs or would I have to upgrade to DP9 ? I'm not opposed to buying used or refurbished as long as the computer is not too old. What is the best OS to run for DP ? I know some Pro Tools users dont like the newer OS. any input would be greatly appreciated. thank you !

Let this be a lesson to other mac users--
DOWNLOAD ALL OS INSTALLERS (as they now disappear after each new release)--

SAVE/BACK-UP all KONTAKT (and other) installers; in case they are no longer available.

You might want to confirm that you can't re-install kontakt from the original disks then update from within the NI Service center (in the OS you are at). Perhaps Kontakt will only update it to the latest version that runs on your OS.

But if you get a new mac, there will be a limit to how far back of an OS it will install anyway. There are lots of posts clarifying which versions of DP will run in which OS's (supported or not). I just haven't kept track of which.

Absolutely. And you don't have to install them. And you can just get the last release of each version. Just downloading makes them appear in the App Store "purchased" list. I still have Lion available in mine.

There are .. ... ways ... to get the OS you need. But it can be a little tricky as I've run into problems getting the installer to work (it starts, then says gives some error about the installer).

Someone might be able to help you get the installer for 10.9.

For the record:

Wish I had done this. I need 10.9.

Thank you. I guess its best to stay up to date. Once you upgrade one thing you need to upgrade everything else. Its a slippery slope

Although 7.24 is not supported, it will install and run through El Capitàn, OS 10.11.x. You need a CD drive or access to one to authorize.

DP 7 will not install in Sierra—it runs if installed in an earlier OS that is updated.

Many older plugins no longer run in various OS updates.

You can get an OS installer from anyone who has installed it in the past.

Download the installer and zip the file before copying—if that isn't done, the installer probably won't run on any other Mac. The zipped file can be copied onto any media that supports a 6G file including Dropbox--even a network transfer.

Double-click to unzip and run the installer. As part of the process, you'll be asked to log into the App Store to register the OS to your account.

Trash the installer and zip file when done. You will now be able to download again if needed.
