Dumb question about the cursor

Post by supersonic »

Can we display a vertical line across the whole sequence that shows the position of the cursor at any given time when we edit automation or soundbites?

Are you talking about the playback wiper? Yea, DP makes the wiper disappear during an edit-- (like dragging a note or soundbite) which is desirable at times, but there are times when it would be very useful to see it.

I'm not aware of a way to change that behavior.

Do marker lines stay onscreen during edits? I'll have to check. It is annoying to loose a reference line.

Marker lines do stay on screen during edits. So that's an option. Might be a little tedious to drag around a marker for such purposes, but it's better than nothing.

Agree, and I asked MOTU to fix it some time ago. Not only to allow the cursor to stay visible, but to also show a ghost of the waveform in a soundbite being moved, rather than just a box. The combination of the two would make it easy to move a specific point in a Soundbite to a specific point in the timeline without the current trial and error approach.

A ghost of the waveform is a great point. You want to see what the waveform looks like in the new location! It could be turned on or off in preferences.

I mean the actual cursor, not the wiper.

Ah. Not sure how that would work.

I would very much like to have that functionality as well as the usual graphic program snap to object etc functions, to be able to align faster different elements.

I misunderstood too, but see what you mean. That could be very useful. Maybe there is a OSX utility that would draw vertical and horizontal lines that intersect at the mouse position. I can remember seeing one, but not where or when I saw it. There is one for windows here.

One here for Mac, but it looks dodgy. I didn't try downloading it

This is really important. It falls squarely into the category of a utility I didn't know I needed until someone mentions it (and well it takes me however many days to realize that I didn't understand at first).

I'll check out those links and keep looking around. This is a cool thread.

Just found this one, but it turns out that the crosshairs are visible in a "measurement" mode, and can't be used in a general way. I've contacted the developer with a request to change its behavior:

https://itunes.apple.com/us/app/euclid/ ... 3396?mt=12

And this-- perhaps I can load a demo and test it.

http://xscopeapp.com

OMG. I've got a crap-ton of edits coming up. This could be really useful.

Ok, the xscopeapp (linked above) does work. You can hide the coordinate field that follows the mouse and just have the crosshairs-- it does however replace the cursor arrow with a very tiny and hard to see icon.

At $50, it's too much (for me) to justify it. All those other features I don't need and wouldn't use. Perhaps I'll contact that developer and mention this thread.

I'll let you know if I hear anything back from the Euclid dev.

The cursor magically disappears as it glides into the MIDI editing window and turns into a tiny barely visible crosshairs that once are found, after moving the mouse back and forth, need to be carefully guided to the MIDI note - LEAVE THE CURSOR ALONE PLEASE - or at least have an option for it to stay the arrow. There probably is a fix by now (2022) Tons of other upgrades and fixes. thx!.
I'M GOING BLIND TRYING TO EDIT THESE PROJECTS.

Please MOTU- your target audience is getting pretty old and reading glasses can only do so much.

Thanks!!!
