Soundiron Theremin+ -- best theremin VI ever!

Post by mhschmieder »

Soundiron released a Kontakt library for the Theremin a few days ago -- I think it's still on sale but not for much longer.

This is far and away the best Theremin library or VI ever (and I have several, if not all of them)!

For years, I have been programming sine wave based patches in my hardware and software Minimoog instruments, with Glide set for long portamento, and detuning of the oscillators.

They always ended up sounding sour or out of tune, on some if not all notes, no matter how I tweaked.

This library is miraculous, and reacts properly to note gaps vs. note overlaps as well as portamento/glide, whether a half-tone or an octave or more.

Very cheap to boot. This will now be my go-to for Theremin.

I have a few Theremin parts in my Doctor Who tribute album, and the timing could not have been better, as I had almost resolved myself to just living with the Minimoog answer.

This truly is an incredible library - thanks so much for sharing this!

Caught the sale, but even at full price (still inexpensive) this is definitely worth it - the audio samples on their site really represent this well.

All sounds can be used as .wav files in any sampler, but to use the Kontakt presets one requires the full retail edition of Kontakt - the free Kontakt player does not work with those fully, though one can work with it 15 minutes at a time in DEMO mode.

I bought this but I am getting an error that states:
Your version of Kontakt is too old to load this file.
You can update to the latest version by exiting Kontakt and starting Service Center.
I updated to version 5.3.0 and restarted but I get the same message when trying to load the Theremin. Earlier purchases from Soundiron seem to be working OK. I tried it in both DP 9.12 and as Kontakt standalone. Same results.

Reported to Soundiron tech support.

Looks like the "Service Center" for Kontakt is obsolete. Now it's called "Native Access" and allows for downloading the most recent version (5.6.1) which I'm pretty sure will fix this.

I downloaded the updater too, from their "Native Access" page, but encountered no problems with it. Running Windows, though.

Could an old preferences file be mucking up the works?

This was a task but well worth the effort. Great VI. I also snagged the traveler organ. Love that one too.

And yes, I disabled the phone home feature in the app. The last thing I need is to have a session go south because an app decided it was lonely...

Yes, that Traveler Organ is extremely tempting! Not many VIs like it around.

It's not your grandpa's organ - oh wait, it IS!!!! Really nice sound and not a quality you can easily copy with the standard organs. It really evokes a special kind of mood. Maybe I'll write a piece for that and the theremin AFTER tomorrow.

Actually, it quite literally is! My grandfather was the music director/pianist/organist at the South Norwalk Palace Theater in CT back in the Vaudeville and later the silent movie days. (He would have loved your silent movie treatments as much as I do!)

They initially had a pump organ like this - and though at some point they had a Great Wurlitzer added to the theater, I'll bet he used the pump organ more often for the silent movies. The South Norwalk Palace was where the critics from NYC reviewed the incoming acts playing next in the circuit at the Palace Theater in NY, so he met all the greats! A pity I never got to meet him - he died from Tuberculous a few years before I was born due to weakening of his lungs from mustard gas during WW1.

Also a pity I did not genetically inherit but a 10th of a percent his talent (if that)! :-)

Just bought it--and I actually own and play a real Theremin! For $9.00, this is a real no-brainer! Thanks for the heads-up!
