PACE replaces 2nd gen iLok w/ 3rd gen -- backward compatible
http://www.sonicstate.com/news/2016/10/ ... nnounced-/
This news took me by surprise today -- I only saw it on Sonic State and nowhere else.
Given how many publishers use "too many licenses" (VSL is a prime contender for that title, but they use Steinberg's eLicenser), it's amazing how fast my gen2 iLok is to filling up. For example, every Falcon/MachFive library eats up at least one license slot!
I have a gig pretty soon so can't study the details in depth, but a quick skim indicates that gen3 is backward compatible with gen2 (unlike gen2 to gen1) and is mostly about robustness and capacity.
Given the $50 cost though, it might be best to wait for "specials" from vendors that include one for free in a library or plug-in purchase. maybe Slate will do so?

Oh, I'm not as close to the limit as I thought. The gen2 iLok holds 500 licenses; I thought it was 300. The gen3 iLok holds 1500 licenses and is smaller; more like the eLicenser size I guess.
There seems no compelling reason to buy a new one, that I can see, but it will certainly be appealing to newcomers and might also help alleviate a few concerns people might have who have avoided products that require iLok.
I would be interested in seeing if it's faster, but it's already way faster than eLicenser so it isn't a big concern. Probably that is limited by the voltage spec of USB or USB2 anyway.

I've never known speed to be an issue with iLok.
I'm nowhere near capacity on my iLok2 but it's nice to know that, if I'd do, I can get one that's 3x the size.

As soon as I opened the link what jumped out at me was the ability to put the Gen3 iLok on a keychain.

Maybe you can do that with Gen2. I don't want to crawl behind stuff to look right now. But it's a metal housing it appears instead of plastic? Like that.

The metal bit is new though.

Ahh okay. I was thinking of another proprietary dongle I have to use for a certain app.
