Mac Pro 5.1 3 GHZ 12 Core

Post by AllanKane »

Hi Motunation,
I am thinking of purchasing a used Macpro 3.0 GHZ 12 Core Tower for 2000 dollars Canadian.
Is this a good deal? Thanks for responding.

Check Ebay and get a feel for the market. Depending on the exact model and RAM/HD/SSD included, that sounds like it could be high to me, but I have no reference in Canadian currency. Watch out for 4,1 to 5,1 upgrades misrepresented as 5,1s. Nothing wrong with the upgrade ( I have two), but you should pay less for a 2009 computer, even if it thinks it is a 2010/2012. Also, the GPU that shipped with the 2009 is inferior to the ATI 5770 that is generally found in 2010 and 2012 Mac Pros.

If you are somewhat tech savvy, buy a used 2010 8 core for $1,100 or less here (or anywhere):

then drop in two used X5680 CPUs like these for $208:

and end up with a 2010 5,1 12 core 3.33 for about $1,350 US, plus RAM (also available cheap on Ebay) and a couple of SSDs.

There was a used Mac store near me in Vancouver until a few months ago, and from what I recall, that seems a little high, but of course, that store went out of business. You can compare to on line prices as indicated above.

I don't know if the price is right, but in order to compare I can tell you that within the past six months I bought a 2010 Mac Pro upgraded to 3.33 ghz, 12 cores, 64GB ram, HD, etc.. and it was $2100 USD, whatever that works out to. I did a lot of legwork leading up to it looking at a lot of deals around the web and on eBay and the prices are all over the place depending on what you get, in the end I found that was the right balance of power and price and I feel I paid about the right price for it.

The prices will all vary a lot depending on what video card you have, how much ram you have, etc. There are a few sellers on eBay that deal with refurbishing and reselling these MacPros and I feel they are quite competitive with each other...so you can look for a like system on there by someone that sells a lot of them and you will know about where the price should be for whatever you're getting. You can get a machine with less ram, less video, less CPU..and it can cost a lot less. Just depends on what you wanna do.
