We're supposed to install DP on one hard drive and make sure the OS is on another, right? I have heard this from my earliest days using Performer. My question is: how important is this? Does it really matter?

Incorrect. Install DP on your boot drive.
You may wish to store projects and VI data on separate drives, but splitting data has become less of an issue in this Age of SSDs. Just make sure you BACK UP to a separate drive!
