Has anyone here tried this notation app?

Post by FMiguelez »

I saw it in my Facebook feed. If it works as seen here, it's quite amazing.

Has anyone tried that one or a similar app? It looks like this one is Windoze only :(

A number of us are hoping that StaffPad will make it over to Mac OS but the developer isn't interested.

It doesn't seem to be a matter of interest, but more about the app's dependence on specific Windows technology not available on the iPad or OS X (see blog). He does point out that you can run it on OS X using bootcamp and a particular Wacom tablet and pen.

Still doing pretty good with Finale 2014.5 but if I upgrade to OS X 10.11.6 I'll loose all access to earlier versions. The PC notation app looks nice but frankly I already write with paper and pen, which is the ONLY thing about that PC thing I find appealing. All else, Finale is good and the thought of moving to a PC (or even running that crap on my Mac) is certainly a deal breaker.

For a non-touchscreen notation app - have you tried the free MuseScore? It has been improved a lot over the last few releases, it's serious competition for both Finale and Sibelius now.

Thanks. I'll give it a look!

That doesn't seem to be the scuttlebut on the Finale Forum. Apparently, F-2011 works as long as you don't use AUs. I don't know about 2012. None of the older versions allow Human Playback but that's true of all versions in El Cap including F-2014d. Anyway, there are reports of people using older versions in 10.11.6.

Perhaps it's that the installers no longer work. It may have also been a "we don't support older versions; there are problems; don't even ask" notice from MakeMusic.

So not ready for Prime Time. Besides major bugs that would make MakeMusic blush, MuseScore a) doesn't have real time entry and no plans to offer it any time soon, b) no rests palate for step entry unlike every other notation program and c) no plans for pen notation ever.

When I point out that (a) is a deal breaker for nearly every composer I know or that (b) is a deal breaker for me, I get long winded arguments as to why no one needs either feature.

On the other hand, MuseScore is FREE ... and worth every penny, IMO.
