Still way better than DP's... And frankly, for 200 bucks, one should not expect state-of-the-art samples/synths. Yet they're a good starting point.

Which ones? Are you talking about Virtual Instruments? Because, DP has some very good effects plug-ins.

But for the life of me, I couldn't figure out how to get MainStage to NOT play when I played every other MIDI track. Sort of like Local On being on all the time. I could mute the output of MainStage so I didn't have to hear it for every other overdub and it would play its own MIDI part only from the MIDI track. But how do I I get it NOT to play live from my MIDI keyboard?
I'm not sure if this is related, but you can try Multi Record mode. From the Studio Menu, try turning on Multi Record. When it is off, DP will listen to any MIDI channels and echos out. With Multi Record on, it will only respond to the specific channel & device listed at the input. Hope that helps.

Indeed I was referring to VIs. I almost never use DP's included VIs, except for MX4 from time to time, whereas in Logic, I use them quite often, specially Alchemy and Drummer. I would use EXS24 more if the UI weren't as horrible

Makes sense. Just didn't want to besmirch the FX plugs because many of those are very good. :)

At the risk of detouring this thread, I sure would love it if MOTU came out with a MS type app, I find myself frequently wishing I could use DP VIs and plugs in MS.

Hmmm... that's something you can request at motu.com. I'm certain a few others around here would be interested.

OTOH, since Apple prices MainStage under $30, it would be hard for anyone's marketing department to justify giving the green light on such a project. Perhaps as an add-on for DP users but then, at what price?

Mind you, this is idle speculation on my part—I don't work for MOTU.
