32 bit vs 64 bit

Post by zedboy »

Feels like a stupid question for someone who's been using DP as long as I have, but... What are the benefits of 64 bit vs 32 bit in DP?

You can basically access more than 4 GB of RAM with the latter. I'm not sure what the limit is for 64 bits, but you won't be adding that much RAM anytime soon.
Mac Mini Server i7 2.66 GHs/16 GB RAM / OSX 10.14 / DP 9.52
Tascam DM-24, MOTU Track 16, all Spectrasonics' stuff,
Vienna Instruments SUPER PACKAGE, Waves Mercury, slaved iMac and Mac Minis running VEP 7, etc.

The memory addressing limits of 64 bit far exceed the RAM capacity of any known Macintosh.

How much RAM do you have? Ok, it's a whole lot more than that.

64 bit is a REALLY BIG DEAL for VI's. Use that memory like a champ!

If not using VI's, not so much.

Thx everyone. Yes I use lots of VIs and Kontakt often crashes DP when I get too much going on. The only reason I'd been avoiding it is that I have plugs and VIs that I'd have to dump or upgrade. (and JBridge doesn't work on everything) Anyway thx again and I'm on it!

As others have stated, addressing more than 4GB of RAM is the most obvious advantage.

Another difference is that a different instruction set for 64bit memory addressing can improve performance. That's the case on iOS - thought I'd mention it, because the thread is about 64bit in general.
