Generate SMTPE from DP and MIDI Express XT

Post by JSmith1234567 »

I need to generate SMPTE timecode from DP and my MIDI Express XT, but can't get it to work.

I tried various settings in DP and Clockworks, but nothing seems to work.

I searched the forum, as well as Motu's site and found this tech-note, but it doesn't work...

http://www.motu.com/techsupport/technot ... m=timecode

Can anyone help? Thanks!

New Mac Pro

Latest OS X

Latest DP

Framerate is 23.97, so it's a more recent XT as it allows that.

DP can send MTC but in order to get that MTC into the sync function of the Express XT you'll need to use a MIDI cable to loop from output back to input.

In Clockworks software set the sync source for the XT to MTC. In the Routing window draw a cable from the returning MIDI input on the left to the MTC icon on the right.

In DP got to the Setup menu>Transmit Sync For the MTC destination choose the correct port on the XT.

Thanks so much!

I'm actually trying to send LTC to slave a ProTools system, via the 1/4" TRS on the back of the XT.

That is what I'm having issues with?

Thanks!

In the Clockworks software set the Sync mode to Internal. In the routing page there should already be a connection from the computer icon on the left to the MMC icon on the right.

In DP go to the Studio menu and choose MIDI Machine Control. Enable MMC. The Express XT should show up in the window and also be enabled.

When you press Play in DP, DP sends an MMC start command to the XT. The XT generates MTC back to DP and DP rolls. The XT also generates LTC.

Hey that did it !!!

Thanks so much, really !!!

Anyone reading this should also make sure the frame-rate in Clockworks is set to match the frame-rate in DP?

Is that correct...I want to make sure that I'm not giving incorrect advice?

Thanks again.

For sure the frame rates should match in DP, the XT, and anything downstream.

Seeing as myself (and probably allot of others) also often have to enable the opposite scenario, can you tell us for posterity how to slave a MIDI XT and DP to incoming LTC?

Thanks again!

Set the sync mode of the XT to LTC QuickLock. Set the sync source in DP to MTC.
