Should I mix DP 8 projects in DP 9?

Post by stevenew »

Just thinking aloud here.

I have just finished recording tracks for next album in DP 8.07, I will start mixing this week, I wouldn't normally dare switch versions during a project but there is a little voice in my head saying "why not mix in DP 9.02".

I have yet to do anything serious in DP 9 and was not intending to until I start the next new project. Plus I am not sure I could cope until the AmpGUI themes for DP 9 are available as I live in Mellow:-)

Any advantage to mixing in DP 9?

If you're under a severe time crunch, I can see staying with the familiar. Otherwise, there's new functionality, and some workflow changes you might really like.

Except for a time issue, I don't see a downside. You can't screw up a project in 9 that would make it unavailable for rescue in 8. There were some 32/64bit issues, especially with 3rd party plugs in the DP 7–8 transition but there's none of that here.

My 2¢.

I'm with Mike here, plus there are some new features in 9 that I really like for mixing. Specifically, automation lanes and MIDI learn are two features that have made automating a mix much easier. That said, if you're under a time crunch I always say "if it ain't broke don't fix it."
