It's very easy. There are many ways to do this.rickorick wrote:How does one do a clean install? I thought one had to at least have 10.6.8 to get into the APP
store so one could upgrade from there.
If you are on OS 10.6.8, update the OS from the App Store. Now shut down, Option-Boot into the Repair disk. Use Disk Utility to reinitialize your drive and reinstall the current OS. Only versions of the OS that you have downloaded before will show up in the App Store plus the current (10.11.3) Now you can restore your apps and files one at a time from backup. Plan a few days of doing nothing else.
If you are on 10.7.3 or later, Option-Boot into the Repair Disk and go from there.
If you created your current boot drive from a Clone, there will be no repair disk. In that case do the same as the instructions for 10.6.8 above.
Note: this is for a clean install—why anyone does this unless necessary is beyound me. If you just want to update, do it from the App Store.
Have a good backup, preferably Time Machine before you do any of this.
IF YOU ARE ON OS 10.9.4, UPDATE TO 10.9.5 FIRST! Google the 10.9.5 Combo Installer as there is a major backup/restore bug in 10.9.4. My last clean install was due to this bug—I hadn't done one since I upgraded from my Mac+ to a Performa 6200 in 199? I had to move my files manually from a Time Machine backup and my apps from installers. It took me a week.
