El Capitan OSX

Any reason at this point not to upgrade to it?

Thanks!

I did so recently and everything is working (except theres no support/drivers for old Canon pixma printers-boo Canon- unrelated to here tho).
However DP 9.02 does seem a bit tentative- it has crashed or hung during some moves (like switching from one sequence to another, and switching from one Mixing board layout to another- but has also done both of those ok since the initial snags). I changed my OS and Dp version at the same time tho so I'm not sure what is the troubled party honestly.
All my plugs/synths and 32 lives seem good (haven't opened Sampletank yet). I'm pleased overall. I was having Macbook issues with Skype and my Thunderbolt ports b4 with OS 10.8 and those appear resolved.
I'm eagerly awaiting the newer DP update with hopes of lower CPU usage!
Good luck if you go for it!

Some of my clients have this issue. Print drivers for many older Canon printers were no longer bundled starting with Yosemite. If you updated the OS instead of doing a clean install, this is not an issue—likewise with El Capitan.

I found the print and scan drivers for Mavericks on the Canon site, installed those and everything is working again. I wrote out a set of instructions but they're not on my iPad. I'll post if you need them.

Thanks Mike. I found a work around set of drivers by Gutenprint that seems to be working. Haven't used the printer much but it appears to be seen and by the OS now. If it fails in the near future I may reach out to you. Thanks again!

Most things are running better in El Cap. A couple of apps went South but nothing I can't live w/o. All my Adobe and MA Office stuff work. Final Cut Express it dead. I'll miss that but can run it on my older machine.

I updated, but reverted to Yosemite. The problem was the Mac would not restart after 10.11 was installed. I've found a number of discussions of this problem and it appears to be a problem with extensions. There are a number of them that will cause 10.11 to freeze during the startup process. It's a consequence of Apple's increased focus on security. The solutions: a) find out which extension is the culprit and remove it (a tedious process of elimination), or b) do a clean install and reinstall all your apps (equally or more tedious).

There was an update to 10.11 that said in an indirect way they had addressed the problem, but the posts on the problem suggest the fix was not complete. There's also some finger pointing going on about whether Apple should test for and remove offending extensions, or whether developers should have paid attention to Apple and updated their apps. Either way, there are a lot of people out there whose Macs became doorstops.

The days spent recovering from this has put me in the "if it works, leave it alone" camp.

Excellent info. I had been planning on holding out until finishing the main phase of production on my jazz album, just as last year I didn't upgrade to Yosemite until finishing all but the final mastering touches on a metal album.

Good to know about possible Extensions conflicts, and what to do if my Canon printer isn't happy after the El Capitan upgrade.

Well...I did the upgrade and everything is working fine, including plug-ins, VIs, VE Pro and Finale.

Pretty painless to do. Took about 20 minutes.

Printers (HP & Brother) are working fine.

Pretty much the same here. Everyone talking about taking the leap off a big cliff and it was more like stepping off a curb.

Why Apple is no longer including certain Canon print drivers is anyone's guess — especially since many of these printers were bundled at no extra charge if you bought from the Apple Store.

This will re-enable many
http://www.macupdate.com/app/mac/27696/ ... er-drivers

If not, you'll find them by model here
https://www.usa.canon.com/internet/port ... me/support

The generic CUPS drivers will often get the job done but often the mfr's drivers are necessary to enable the full print and scan functionality.

For the brief time I had 10.11 on my MBP I was able to get an updated driver for my Canon printer from the Canon website.
