Trouble with Korg nanoKontrol2

Post by jim2b »

Hi folks,

I use a Novation Zero XL remote as a MIDI message controller, mainly for VI's and sometimes for DP. It works well.

I recently purchased a Korg nanoKontrol2 for the same purpose, but with a much smaller footprint.

I set it up the way they recommend for DP. Create device/Mackie console.. etc.

The transports work, so DP is seeing it, but no CC messages are being received.

I downloaded the editor from Korg, but I cannot get it to work.

Does anyone have any insights as to why this isn't working?

Thanks, Jim

The nanokontrol manual has some info of 'how to boot' it for DP use...
Digital Performer
1. While pressing and holding down the SET MARKER and FF buttons, connect the USB cable from your computer to the nanoKONTROL2.
Settings for “Audio MIDI settings”
• From “Audio MIDI setup,” open “MIDI Device” or “MIDI Studio,” then select “Add Device.”
• Name the added device. (e.g., nanoKONTROL2 DP)
• Connect the added device with the nanoKONTROL2 as shown on the left.
2. Open the “Control Surface” window in Digital Performer, then select “Mackie Control” for “Driver” and “Unit.”
3. Select the nanoKONTROL2 ports for “MIDI.”

Best

Hi Klaus,

Thanks for your response.

I had already consulted the manual, and followed their instructions,
but it isn't working.

Thanks again,

Jim

Do you have the Korg USB MIDI Driver loaded? The Kontrol 1 won't work with the driver, the Kontrol 2 won't work without it. Download it and install it (and restart) - then start up the Kontrol 2 as it states in the manual for DP mode. It should then work.

I hadn't downloaded the MIDI driver.

Thanks a million!

I'll try it tomorrow.

Hi folks,

I downloaded and installed the latest USB MIDI driver, and the latest Korg editor.

Still no luck. I'm going to call Korg on Monday.

This should be working, but I can't see what I am overlooking.

Thanks again,

Jim

Restoring the factory settings:
By turning on the power while holding down the PREV TRACK button, NEXT TRACK button, and CYCLE button, you can return the nanoKONTROL2’s settings to their original factory-set default state. The transport buttons except the CYCLE button will then blink.
and...Never use any USB cable other than the one that’s included.

Sorry if you tried it already

to help troubleshoot this sort of issue, use MIDI Monitor to track what MIDI messages are sent. http://www.snoize.com/MIDIMonitor/

DP mode is some form of Mackie Emulation where movement of fader sliders generates Pitch Bend messages. In DP, this mode kinda boxes you in - when the track order changes the slider function does not follow - Fader 1 always controls the 1st track.

Try Korg Kontrol Editor / Control tab / Control Mode set to CC

To use the NanoKontrol for transport control in CC mode, go into DP / Commands, scroll down to the Transport section to setup Play/Stop Toggle, Record and Stop to MIDI Events.

There's a bit of a trick there: click the MIDI event window to engage Learn, press and hold the desired Nano button, click off to the side to set the event to the button's down state. End up with something like: #45 | 127.
