Conversion Question...

Post by Temple Island »

Hey all.
Question.... I am wanting to come out of my Motu MK3 2408 "spdif" into a outboard converter then into my outboard master compressor, out of the compressor back into the converter then into the Motu Mk3 2048 optical to record the final master.....is this possible? want to know before I purchase the converter... this seems to be the only way out to my outboard gear... I am open to other suggestions!

Thank you
Bob

Hello,
So I have to assume a couple things.
1. You've decided using the D/A in the 2408 mkIII doesn't sound good enough.
2. SPDIF (coaxial??) is your only output option.

I personally am not fond of coaxial SPDIF due to excessive latency and clock jitter problems. Optical SPDIF would be much better output if you have to have external D/A.

Those things said there shouldn't be a problem except that you are adding another layer of D/A > A/D sampling which may or may not be ok. If MOTU A/D is not good enough for you, I suspect adding another conversion layer won't be either.......

Just playing devil's advocate here, but if the outboard converter provided a nice stable clock, and the 2408 acted as the clock slave, wouldn't that eliminate the clock jitter issue?

Assuming the outboard converter can work both input and output conversions simultaneously, I don't think it would be a problem.

Hello,
Well actually, it's the coax cable and circuit that gets unstable. Cables should be as short as possible and never over 3'.
Use word clock.
