My rule of thumb going back to analog days: I use an effect till it sounds the way I want — then I back it off as much as 50%.

A day or two later, I will listen again with fresh ears and an open mind. Sometimes, I will increase the effect but rarely to the degree that I liked in an intense mix session.

It's not a hard and fast rule. Sometimes you're under a deadline or you've done certain things so often that there's no need to revisit your work.

So true. I try not to release any mix until I've had an opportunity to listen with fresh ears. Adjust it - back off. That's good advice, Mike.
