Suggestions On Motu Interface

Post by wonder »

I currently have a 2012 Mac Pro (no Thunderbolt) and am using a Motu 2408 via PCI card as my interface. I'm looking to try to get into CUEMIX FX so I can use the FX for my headphone cues.

Is there any interface I can buy from Motu that uses the current PCI card I have installed that will give me access to CUEMIX FX?

I'm really starting to like CUEMIX now that I've wrapped my head around it.

PS, My needs are 3 banks of ADAT.

Short Answer: No.

If you need FX (like reverb) for tracking, I'd suggest adding another 2408mk3 (assuming you are using all three banks of the 2408 you currently own) and a hardware 'verb or two for tracking reverb. Set up a buss for reverb sends and return to the main and various monitor busses to taste.

Decent hardware reverb, certainly adequate for tracking, is very affordable these days.

CueMix is built into the 424 PCIe card. There will never be another generation of these.

Either a hardware reverb unit as HCM sunsets or a FW/USB interface with CueMix FX built in.

I found a brand new Alesis Wedge reverb the other day. I remember buying it but have never taken it out of the box. Something to put on eBay, no doubt.

So its the USB/FW units that have CUEMIX FX?

I do have outboard reverb which I'm using but as I'm aware, CUEMIX FX has some cool compressors and things that I don't have externally.

I do have an 828mkII as well I could put in the chain?

According to this, there was an update that supported CueMix FX on the 424 card.
http://www.motu.com/download/download_m ... duct_id=21

MOTU Universal Audio Installer for Mac OS X
This package installs updated Mac OS X drivers and software for all MOTU FireWire, USB, Hybrid, and PCI-424 audio interfaces. FW/USB (v1.6.54199), PCI (v1.6.53876), MicroBook (v1.6.52865), and CueMix FX (v1.6.55333).

The CueMix FX app now supports PCI-424 systems and replaces the legacy CueMix Console app. Mac OS X version 10.5.8 or later is recommended. This update also contains CueMix FX support for TouchOSC and TouchOSC Layouts 1.0 for MOTU products. Supports Mac OS X 10.8 (Mountain Lion). Supported MOTU products include:
DP 11.31; 828mkII FW, micro lite, M4, MTP/AV USB Firmware 2.0.1
2023 Mac Studio M2 8TB, 192GB RAM, OS Sonoma 14.4, USB4 8TB external, M-Audio AIR 192|14, Mackie ProFxv3 6/10/12; 2012 MBPs Catalina, Mojave

Mike, thanks for the post. I have that installer and that version of CUEMIX FX on my computer but its just the interface of CUEMIX that got updated. Apparently, the 2408mkIII doesnt actually support CUEMIX FX (cuemix WITH the FX portion of the CueMix App).

CueMix FX will allow you to use the meters — oscilloscope, spectroscopes, etc — with the PCI 424 cards, but NOT the effects. Period.

I still use a PCI-424 MOTU 1296, which I love, and I also have an 896mk3 with CueMix FX. (there is also a 2408mkII attached, but I never use it, because it doesn't do higher sample rates) I can usually manage some arrangement in which I use the 896mk3 if I want FX.

BUT: With my summer 2012 Mac Pro (12 core) I can track at a buffer of 64 while monitoring through the DP Mixing Board with MOTU's Plate Reverb onboard. Works fine. I haven't had any complaints about latency at a 64 sample buffer on that rig. The plate reverb sounds great these days. (and really, it always did) MOTU's older plugins don't use much CPU.
