I do all the automation in DP and only sum in Mixbus. So far it has worked ok. Also it allows me to prepare my sessions for an analog desk, where I prepare everyone for the Mixbus and then simply switch the AUX outs in DP for hardware out going to the analog desk when I go to the studio
I don't think that would work for me. I make use of the Mixbus channel strips.

Not sure what you mean. They don't sum for a start. There are more than 8 of them. The processors are different. What I'm saying is I run the audio tracks through a Mixbus channel strip and its eq and dynamics as part of the mix, rather than just running them to the summing bus.

There sure is 8 main group busses in MixBus but you can create as many aux busses as You want. And they all behave like the normal tracks, except that you can feed DP tracks to them via JackPilot. I haven't done any big sessions like that but the small ones (12-16 tracks) work ok.

How do you automate an effect in Mixbus without the transport link working? Or do you have everything static in Mixbus and all the automation in DP? If the latter, I guess I could do that by creating a V-Rack with all the outs to Mixbus and in from Mixbus via Soundflower, and a Mixbus project set up to route the audio through it's mixer.

You are right, I use it only as an analog mixer front end. No automation on that side. I also record the mix directly in Mixbus but you can record it back in DP of course. I have all the buses going to Jack in V-rack so that when I switch between sequences set up for mix Mixbus doesn't loose the input assignments.
