I'd love to get my JL Cooper CS-32 working again but official support ended with OS 10.4. I made it work through 10.6. There are no drivers. 32 mechanical sliders on a frame the size of an iPad. I could make it work on my G4 but I'm not doing any more production in DP 5.

Unfortunately the JL Cooper PPS-100 was a dog. The buttons always got stuck. Thank goodness I don't have to map tempo changes to 10ths of a beat and calculate sections using algebra any more. That's how SMPTE sync worked in the late 1980s until I started using SVP and later Performer. Still, the PPS got me through a few dozen scores. Back on topic...

Maybe El Cap was a bad name choice. It's more like Half Dome, or more accurately, Half Done.

I have been reading of a font issue that goes something like this:

32bit programs sometimes crash El Capitán due to a System Font issue. The cause appears to be users who changed the NSFont Preferences, generally using TinkerTool, Onyx or Terminal with instructions found online.

Crash logs generally have lines like this at the beginning:

Exception Type: EXC_BAD_ACCESS (SIGSEGV)
Exception Codes: KERN_INVALID_ADDRESS at 0x0000000000000020
Exception Note: EXC_CORPSE_NOTIFY

The crash log backtrace may then contain something like the following:

-[CFPrefsPlistSource mergeIntoDictionary:]

Or:

- [NSConcreteMapTable objectForKey:]
+ [__NSFontTypefaceInfo typefaceInfoForPostscriptName:options:]

This issue only occurs when the user account's global preferences are set to override certain font settings.

Apple's response:

There are no plans to address this based on the following:

Changing NSFont is not supported.

We are now closing this report.

If you see these crashes, to get back up and running, try the following steps:

Open Terminal.app from the /Applications/Utilities folder.
Type or copy/paste the following:

defaults delete .GlobalPreferences NSFont

Reboot

Scrivener has the most measured response to this issue that I have read (perhaps because they're English?):

Presumably, users who are running into this bug have used some sort of tool in the past that has modified their .GlobalPreferences file to override the NSFont entry, and this causes crashes on El Capitan. But because this wasn't something supported officially, Apple has no interest in fixing it.

I'm getting emails every day from companies whose plugins I use- warning that I should not go to El Cap. Most of the problem seems to be that the AUs won't pass validation. This morning is was UVI Workstation, but apparently they already have a fix!

Apple sure broke the crap out of it this time.

From what I've read 10.11.1 will fix the AU validation...

No idea why they decided to add this SIP crap. It was perfectly fine before.

As more days pass with El Capitan on all my macs, I have to admit I don't use its specific features - in fact I use my OS exactly the same way as I used Mavericks. Kinda makes me wonder why I upgraded to 10.10 and 10.11!

Most likely yes. After installing the new OS I got incompatibily messages for my intuos tablet, my SSL driver disappeared from my sound prefs, etc. Turns out my tablet driver was fine, as well as my SSL driver. After disabling SIP everything was back to normal. Even if 10.11.1 fixes the AU validation bug, SIP may continue to "get in the way". If I have to continue using EL Capitan without the System Integrity Protection, I'll simpply use a command line tool to repair permissions if/when needed.

Good to know. I have high hopes that disabling SIP will allow the AlphaTrack USB driver to work in El Cap. It will be a few days before I can test this theory. :(
