AAF Interleaved Stereo

Post by supersonic »

Hello Everyone

A thing that has bothered me for a long time now - every time I import AAF into DP the stereo tracks do not stay interleaved and create 2 separate mono tracks. Is there any way to keep the tracks interleaved?

Are you importing to a stereo track?

You can use QuickTime to convert AAF to .wav and importing that.

I am importing a PT session that has close to 100 tracks, many of them Stereo. Doing it manual is a pain...

QuickTime Amateur (might be just QT Amateur) lets you do bulk conversions. Not the best solution but somewhat less painless. It's also very useful for any QT conversion/exporting.

I have conversion programs like Sample Manager or SoundGrinder which convert between the two but I still need them in the AAD session itself. I see that PT session has them separated. Perhaps there is a way to convert those into interleaved with protools itself and then (perhaps) the exported AAF will take that into account.

Have you checked Preferences > Audio Files and checked 'Interleaved'?

I'm thinking there's another preference involved too, or maybe a mini-menu item but I can't recall or find it at the moment.

I don't deal with AAF so this may not even apply, but hey, we try.

I believe he is referring to QT 7.6.6. This is free from Apple and installs in the Utilities Folder (conflicts with QT 10.x otherwise). Very handy tool.

If you have a QT Pro license for 6 or 7 (Mac), this will accept it. Unfortunately, you can no longer look up your old keys in your support account. Apple purged those a few years ago.

In a bit of weirdness – even for Apple – QT 7.7 stopped working after OS 10.5.x and was replaced by OS 7.6.6 :shake:

This QT Amateur - seems it hasn't been updated for some time https://mikeash.com/software/qtamateur/index.html

I'll second the use of Sound Grinder, not only for it's batch conversion abilities, it has extensive metadata functions as well.

Sound Grinder looks great, but at $350 it's a little pricy. QT Amateur is free and regardless of not having been updated, it works great for quicktime conversions. Not really an audio tool at all.

Did i mention it's free...?

Yes. I have that checked all the time. Think it is more on the PT side as the files are separated on that side. I will have to check that out.
