A Cautionary Tale

Post by scooter »

I just had my junk files, as they call them, cleaned out with Mac Keeper. Some 4000 files. Since then here's my get info for D.P.:Image

But when I boot up I get this:Image

Why would D.P. not start up in 32bit mode?
Suggestions anyone??

A lot of my plug-ins are still 32bit.

Thanks and be well,

Better reinstall DP. Looks like it needs some of those "junk" files.

(I hear nothing good about MacKeeper.)

Yeah, reinstall, and stay away from those Mac cleanup programs.

I did a trial of one a few weeks ago, and am still recovering from the damage.

I don't think I'll be home free until I upgrade to Yosemite in a day or two.

Then I'll have a whole new set of problems. :-)

Anyway, the point is that all of those "helper" programs are too stupid to handle the needs of anyone who uses their computer for anything other than gaming, email, social networking, and other forms of entertainment.

One of the things they all brag about is getting rid of "unneeded" 32-bit code on your system.

Yeah that's the other thing. I wonder if I should try to make the Yosemite jump??

Anyhow Bayswater and mhschmieder, that's exactly what I was thinking too. Especially after I trashed the preferences and the plist. No difference. So that's my next step for sure.

thanks,

I also have never heard a good word about MacKeeper. That's water under the bridge, but another cautionary tale involves FileZilla, which I only recently learned installs MacKeeper and some other cooties:

BTW the one I tried that is probably the reason EWQL Play doesn't have fonts anymore (even after a fresh reinstall) is CleanMyMac. STEER CLEAR! I only took the chance because I knew I was upgrading to Yosemite soon anyway.

@scooter, stay away from MacKeeper at all costs. The best thing you can do to keep your mac healthy is to actually make sure you delete everything related to this piece of junk. What it does is very suspicious, and it's only equalled by the company's highly questionable business practices.

Then I would trash all DP prefs and reinstall.

Absolutely stay away from MacKeeper. Many times MK is installed during install of java upgrades or adobe flash player. Be REALLY careful reading every single install screen. Usually there is a checked box saying "I also want to install...."
Analog is great... We got both WOW and Flutter - what's your bias?

That is done by phishing sites. They often install some nasty adware also.

When you get a screen warning that JAVA or Adobe Flash needs to be updated, learn what the real sites look like and update from there.

Java
http://java.com/en/

Flash Player
https://get.adobe.com/flashplayer/

There are legitimate pop-up screens for both but, when in doubt, go to those two links instead.

If running Chrome, Masterwriter or certain other 32bit apps, you need a Java 6 run time:

No problem on avoiding MacKeeper. Their subscription model doesn't make sense to me for general utility software.

Yeah MacKeeper was definitely a mistake on my part. But also I've been using Filezilla for years and didn't know about the Filezilla/MacKeeper connection.

What a coincidence! I get voicemail from a friend today asking if I knew how to "reset" his MacBook. I call him back and guess what? He ran MacKeeper and hosed his MacBook (which was running Snow Leopard) and it won't boot normally... only in safe mode. Fortunately he doesn't have many important files, but he tried everything and finally had to boot from the SL installer disc and reformat the drive and reinstall the OS.

MacKeeper is bad news.
