And this might have been discussed before.....
It's just dawning on me that with the advent of PunchGuard in DP, especially if 'always record pre-roll' is selected, if you don't merge EVERYTHING you will always have that bit of unseen pre-roll recording as part of the file, so if (heaven forbid) files get dumped into another system that does not play well with time stamps, you could have an unforeseen and undocumented offset.
Here I thought I've been good about merging when I close sessions down for archiving, but this has escaped me.

That explains why I sometimes have hidden sound bytes that won't erase as "unused", and only discover them when I slide audio while experimenting with some potential cut/paste operations and the like. Then they go away after a merge operation.
I tend to merge a lot, as I use the audio gain control more than automation and don't feel confident otherwise that I won't lose my careful edits. It hadn't really occurred to me that this might be a good practice for other reasons, as I presumed I might get audio degradation with that many merges.
