I want to get a larger external monitor to use for DP with my late 2014 MacBook Pro 2.9 GHz i7, 16GB Ram. I currently run a 17" external monitor off the mini Display/Thunderbolt port with a MiniDisplay>DVI adapter. I record to the internal 1TB SSD, and use Firewire for the 828MKIII and my backup drive.
• Many monitors have DVI- is there any reason to switch to HDMI or TB?
• Will running a larger monitor (24" or 27") degrade the performance of my system?
• TVs seem to be somewhat cheaper- why not just buy a TV with appropriate inputs?
Thanks
Bill

Re: Monitor (video) shopping advice
When I bought a new monitor a few weeks ago, all the latest models were HDMI. There's an inexpensive adapter available for MiniDisplay/Thunderbolt to HDMI on Amazon for around $7.
I bought a nice backlit LED 24" for $150. 27" weren't that much more but I don't have the desk space.
The TB monitors I found were a lot more expensive.

No complaints here. Run four 27" screens with no issues. Two Samsung HD televisions and two Acer monitors since 2009. Right now you can get a 27" Acer on sale at Office Depot with free shipping for $179.99 which is not bad.

Monitor (video) shopping advice
I am using the HDMI ultra wide monitor from LG at the moment. Love it! They also have a thunderbolt version (which is quite a bit more expensive).
As a second monitor I use a big 50+ " TV screen, also through HDMI (with thunderbolt adapter). As a third one I use IPad through Air Window app.
