Portable Studio

Post by cody »

With VEP finally being MAS native I'm ready to build a portable recording studio around an iMac, and hopefully bridge files back and forth to my 'real' studio using the same template with relative ease. I'm looking at a 27" iMac that can do 32 GB RAM, Akai 61 Key Controller, Apogee Duet and some smaller JBL Monitors.

A few questions...

1) My template in DP is quite large - but am set on using the same layout on my portable rig and just disabling tracks and instances within VEP. Can an i7 iMac handle this? I'm hoping so!

2) Who's streaming samples either off USB3 or Thunderbolt externally? Is it as effective as internal storage? I figure if I can get enough SSD action goin I might get away with loading most of my template without needing the 96 GB I have between my Mac and PC at home.

3) Anybody ever run an iMac off DC power using a sine wave inverter? Looking into doing some off grid stuff, and am intrigue by composing in the backcountry, solar, etc.

4) Designing a custom desk that will fold down and keep everything relatively in place. Ideas for keeping weight down, or any resources appreciated.

I think that's it for now....I'm sure there will be many questions to come!

I can answer your off grid inquiry. I have been running my home and studio....DP/Macs on a Trace inverter for 16 years. No problems at all. In fact, my power is much cleaner than grid tied.

Don't you have windmills and solar panels? I vaguely remember you talking about that, maybe five years ago.

I'm just putting 6.6 kW of grid-tied solar on my studio roof now, using Enphase micro inverters. The Enphase controller talks to the inverters by modulating the AC line at 144k or so. I am hoping noise issues do not arise, but am prepared to filter my studio AC if necessary.

At current rates, the system (which I am installing myself at great cost savings) will pay for itself in about three years. I like the idea of 20 or so more years of free electricity, not to mention (what I hope are) significant environmental benefits.
