The CueMix menu item File>Mix 1 Return includes Computer Output has been very good to me for low latency routing, but I believe it is only available on FW interfaces. (In my case a 1st gen Traveler.)

Does SampleTank 3 Free let you edit your own keymaps/samples? Couldn't tell from the webpage, looked like playback only.

Not sure about SampleTank 3 but the free UVI work station I believe does.

Iris is fun and I suppose can be useful, but in terms of creating a decent sample library, MachFive is far superior and well worth the price. Iris' main "thing" is subtractive synthesis of samples. It's cool and it does that well, but it also produces a particular kind of sound that's geared toward a more "synthy" genre. MachFive is a more serious sampler that results in a more "deliberate" and "functional" sounding result. It does all that Iris does and then some.

I would not consider Iris as a "sampler" in this instance. I've had it for a couple of years now and have yet to find a use in any of my scores for it. Still, it's a lot of fun but I can have was more fun with $300! :)

burnley wrote:Hey everyone.

I have a limited budget and would like to get a sampler to use with DP primarily to build my own library of samples. I am interested in sound design as well as musical applications. MachFive seems like it would be ideal, but the price is a bit out of my budget (I do have East-West Play, so I would be eligible for a $300 competitive upgrade). From what I've seen, Structure looks pretty good for my purposes, and at $150, it's quite affordable. Also curious about Alchemy, but for the money, I probably might as well save up for MachFive. I have considered, but am leaning away from Kontakt — I have the free player and it seems like that will be sufficient for now.

Any advice and opinions based on your experience would be most appreciated.

Thanks!

OSX has a free sampler built into it, you can find it in DP as an instrument called AUSampler. Its capable of setting up keymaps. It does not have sophisticated FX processing as many other samplers do, but if you just need to create some mapped sample setups, it works and its included already.

Here are some other free and cheap samplers:

http://www.plogue.com/products/sforzando/

http://www.musicradar.com/news/tech/4-o ... s-616807/2

In general you can use a variety of tools to create SF2 samples and there are a number of players out there. It sounds like your budget may be bigger and MachFive or Kontakt are great and can do quite a lot of sound processing beyond simple sample playback.

MidiLifeCrisis, how would you compare to M5 to Omnisphere in terms of the synth processing?

Omnisphere 2 is due out in two months, so comparing that to MachFive is premature since none of us have it (unless there are beta testers out there, and they are probably under NDA). The new version will add audio import capabilities, so on the surface it sounds much more akin to being a sampler, although I've not seen it called a "sampler" yet.

O2 is definitely not a sampler like M5. That part of M5 is way beyond what omnisphere can do. But one of the main advantages listed off about M5 is that it's much more then a sampler, it has a synth engine too, which gets into O2 territory, thus the question. O2 can import samples but it does not look to be able to setup key maps and such sample oriented things. It comes with a lot of sample data which is used to process through an extensive synth and fx engine and thousands of presets from Eric Pershing's crew which is the real value IMHO. They are adding quite a lot of wave table data for synth production also. And now you can import your own sample data to basically mangle it, but I would not consider it a sampler like M5. Awesome and incredible synth I am probably going to buy this time even at 500 bucks. But I have always been intrigued by M5 also. I can't justify both in one year that's for sure, but info wonder if M5's synth engine is as capable as O2, since M5 is half the price and has other [REGISTERED SIGN] sampling capabilities, which I probably don't need but why not. The library of sounds must be great but I think Pershing's sound library is probably rather amazing, so I dunno

As an FYI I just saw this: Apple's *bought* Camel Audio?!?!?! http://www.macrumors.com/2015/02/23/app ... mel-audio/

Maybe a bit of added pressure an Motu to add Mach5 to DP in addition to MX4???

Yea, that was one of the worst kept secrets ever. But with Apple it's always, what are they going to do with it?

You could use the Radio Shack logo. I don't think they need it anymore.
