Yes! 'Tis the season to be busy… but here's hoping we all are able to enjoy at least a few peaceful, joyous moments with someone who we like - perhaps even love - a lot.

People with birthdays on or near Christmas always seemed at a disadvantage when it came time for Santa Claus. There was an obvious combo of the two events, whereas kids with June birthdays, like me, had a "Christmas in June" thing going on. I guess I felt kind of guilty about that.

A dear friend of mine has probably the strangest coincidence of dates I've ever known. She's a delightful person, and I don't know how she remains so, for she lost her high-school aged son a few years ago. My friend was born 2 days before Christmas. When she had her first child, a daughter, she was also born on that very same day. A few years ago when she lost her son, that tragic accident also occurred on the same day. Not to be a downer; this gifted woman celebrates her son's life each year with a smile on her face. I know she carries that pain, but she has somehow turned the holiday season into something even more precious than it ever had been before, and her inner strength invigorates those around her and lifts their spirits as it does her own. She didn't have anything to do with those events falling on the same date, but she has made the most of it. The Christmas Holidays wrap her in meaning, life lessons, and have taught her a generosity of spirit seldom seen in anyone. It's hard for me to say "happy birthday" to her, but I slow down and wish her a Merry Christmas with a little more feeling than I used to, and she knows exactly how to take that.

So, those of you with Xmas birthdays, think of yourself as part of a very special celebration; a time of year like no other, and whether by cosmic coincidence or some master plan, you were slated to be a natural-born part of it! Life goes on, but slow down and take these days with a little more feeling.

Merry Christmas (and Happy Birthday to some special folks out there)

That would be my mother. I always make certain to have a separate birthday gift, wrapped in birthday-themed wrapping paper.
