SPDIF Connections & MacBook

Post by JSmith1234567 »

I'm out of analog inputs on my Mac Pro's MOTU 2408 interface but want to try to connect the audio output my old 2009 white MacBook to the input of my 2408 to play ITunes via SPDIF.

I don't understand the MacBook's optical mini-jack output.

Is this a digital connection? Is it SPDIF or TOSLINK?

Can I run a mini-jack to RCA digital cable from the MacBook output to the SPDIF input of the 2408?

Thanks!

The mini jacks become optical jacks with a $2 TOSlink uadapter available from Amazon and other sources. Also works on Minis and iMacs from 2010 and later. I don't know which 2009 Macs take them.

Here they are at $3. I've seen them at $1.50 or so.

And do you then need to also send it back an optical signal the same so it will sync?

Thanks!

Although I answered your original question on how to get optical out, it won't do what you want.

You can expand your inputs a number of ways. There are standalone analog to ADAT converters from Behringer and others. You can add another 2408 to your 424 card.
