Adding an interface

Post by SMS »

I have an 828 mkIII connected via USB. Need more inputs. If I buy an 8pre, what are the pros/ cons of connecting it to the 828 via light pipe vs. connecting to the computer via USB or firewire?

One obvious disadvantage of using light pipe would be tying up those I/Os and not having them available for other things, but if you won't be using them for other things...well, you get the idea. On the other hand you have the same situation with USB/Firewire ports. Can those units be daisy chained?

One consideration might be clocking issues, but I've used light pipe to interface my Apogee Rosetta to my 828 without any noticeable problems. I've also hooked them both up via firewire without any noticeable problems. So I don't know which was better.

Also, I'd be curious to see if there was a difference in latency between the two setups. Just thinking out loud here. I don't think I answered your question - just added more questions to the mix. :?

I use an 8pre via light pipe connected to a 2408mk3.
The 8pre is dedicated to a drum kit I've never noticed a difference in latency between the 2.
I've had the 8pre long enough that I don't remember when I installed it but I've never had a problem with it and its been running 24/7.

Presumably the Mk3 Hybrid. The Mk 3 has no USB.

I have a 2408-2 connected to a 828-3 via ADAT. It works fine, but clocking is always an issue. One channel in the 8 channel ADAT groups will not sync using ADAT as the clock source for the slave. It produces a square wave at about -80db. If I use WordClock, there is no problem.

Just set the clock unit for EACH unit in the Hardware Control Panel. That means you select each unit, one at a time, and set the clock for that unit, then do the next. I used to think that you set the master clock in the unit that you considered the "master," and that was that. But you have to set the clock in EACH unit that is active. If you've ever set the clock, then later found that your settings appeared to have changed, that's most likely why.

That's all...
