.caf files (core audio files) and DP - Solved by Bayswater

Post by MIDI Life Crisis »

I recently started using a few .caf files that are for Final Cut Pro in DP and noticed that I could not apply many plugs. Investigating further and looking at the project, I eventually realized that these are composite files consisting of multiple tracks. They play correctly in DP and I can bounce them to the project sequences, but I was wondering...

Is there an easy way within DP or Audio Desk (or some other program) to separate out the various tracks contained in the .caf file? Or am I stuck with using all the elements? Also, these appear to be 5 or 6 tracks each, so I also wonder if this is a surround sound file?

I found this and several sites with similar info...

TIA.

ps - I discovered that Audio Desk imports these as stereo files, not multi-channel files. :?:

Also just checked my bundles. These are, in fact, surround sound files, as expected, so now I wonder if DP can somehow dismantle them into their component sounds.

I did open a few surround sound Apple Loops for Soundtrack Pro in DP a while ago and they converted to separate files.. though I'm at a loss as far as FCP is concerned and importing, but I think it's possible?

Years ago, I had to study a number of sites to come up with this definition for CAF for the tips sheet acronym glossary:
  • CAF = Core Audio Format. A Core Audio Format (CAF) file can contain audio data of any format. Any application that supports the CAF file format can write audio data to the file or extract the data it contains. However, the ability to encode or decode the audio data contained within it is dependent on the audio codecs available on the system.
Does that shed any light on the situation?

So how do you extract that data in DP? It reads the file and retains the multiple routings to the appropriate 5.1 bus. DP even set up a new bundle all by it self to handle it, but I still don't see how to extract the individual tracks in DP.

Can you export it as a non-interleaved file, and then pick up the individual channels according to a file suffix on the exported files?

i use CAF files a lot for sound FX and such. I always throw them into Compressor and convert them to Stereo WAV files ... then into my DP session.
